Streetwise Tampa Map - Laminated Center City Street Map of Tampa, Florida - Folding pocket size travel map with trolley lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:
Tampa/Clearwater/St Petersburg Area Map 1:330,000
(Map A) St Petersburg Area Map 1:135,000
(Map B) Clearwater Beach/Downtown Clearwater Map 1:48,000
(Map C) Downtown St Petersburg Map 1:21,000
(Map D) Tampa Area Map 1:145,000
(Map E) Downtown Tampa Map 1:19,000

Shhhhh……don’t tell anyone, but this is the best destination in Florida.

The best beach in America is here (Fort DeSoto State Park, rated #1 in the yearly survey by Dr. Beach), the 4th best beach is also here (Caladesi Island State Park), there is a world famous theme park (Busch Gardens), auto racing’s Indy League whizzes through the streets at 170 miles per hour during the Honda Grand Prix race, there are world class restaurants (Bern’s steakhouse has been called the best steakhouse in America), world class shopping (Neiman Marcus leads the pack), one of the hottest night life districts you'll find anywhere (Ybor City is crammed full of clubs and bars) and there are three professional sports teams (the Buccaneers, Lightning, and Rays), and two airports (Tampa International and St Pete Clearwater International) offering you a greater choice of flights. Did I mention golf? Just look! You can find all of that here in the Tampa Bay area. What you won’t find are the crowds of South Beach or Orlando. Substance without the stampede.

The STREETWISE® Tampa Map is actually a combination of several maps to help you get a better understanding of the area:

First there is an area map, the Tampa/Clearwater/St Petersburg Area Map that encompasses the entire Tampa Bay region, from the Sunshine Skyway south of St. Petersburg, north to Tarpon Springs, and east to Interstate 75. This map includes all major highways and exit numbers, major streets and thoroughfares, airports, sites and county lines.

(Map A) is a map of the St. Petersburg area. More detailed than the regional map, this map of the Clearwater/St Petersburg peninsula and barrier islands includes more streets and access roads. Hotels, sites, and parks are indicated on the map. Names of individual beaches are also marked as well as the Pinellas Trail, a 34 mile safe biking trail connecting the north and south part of Pinellas County.

(Map B) is a close up view of Clearwater Beach and Downtown Clearwater. (Map C) is a close up view of Downtown St Petersburg from Interstate 275 out to the Pier, home of restaurants and the Pier Aquarium. Sites such as Tropicana Field, the Salvador Dali Museum and the Museum of Fine Art are clearly marked as well as hotels, educational sites, shopping and parks.

(Map D) covers the Tampa Area from MacDill Air Force Base north to Citrus Park, from the Courtney Campbell Causeway east to Interstate 75 and Brandon. Hotels, shopping, sites, educational sites, government sites, Tampa International Airport and points of interest are all included on this map. Street numbers are listed for major thoroughfares enabling you to easily find addresses.

(Map E) is a close up view of Downtown Tampa. Here you’ll find details on Channelside, Hyde Park Village shopping area, Ybor City and the Tampa Convention Center. The expressways that weave in and out of downtown Tampa are highlighted in yellow and include clearly defined exit and entrance ramps. If you’re going to visit the Tampa Museum of Art, this is the map you’ll need. The cruise terminal and train station are clearly marked. Hotels, educational sites, points of interest, and governmental sites are placed on the map.

Our pocket size map of Tampa is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use.

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

This review is from: Streetwise Tampa Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Tampa, Florida - Folding pocket size travel map with trolley lines (Map)
This map is very handy and made of a cardboard type material so will not tear while reading or storing in the glove compartment. While it would not be possible to list all the streets in the Tampa area on its few pages, it really does help us get around Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater. We use it to help us find our way to major areas like the St. Pete's beach area, the Lowry zoo area, Tampa downtown, exits and entrances to the Suncoast Parkway. But don't throw out all your other maps; this map really doesn't help you find specific streets. But it does give this recent "transferee' a better idea of how to travel around the area and check out the sites.
