Tommy DePaola writes an interesting story about Strega Nona and her cousin. Big Anthony always makes mistakes with Strega Amelia. All the people went back to Strega Nona. I liked the illustrations very much. Lissette. R.

Strega Nona always seems to come out on top with a bit of patience and some sly, cunning knowledge, she waits it out without losing her temper or blowing that calm, knowing image...it's priceless in many ways. A lesson from Strega Nona is always welcome, here the lesson we learn is about competition...when Strega Amelia comes to visit and sees how many people come to Strega Nona she's impressed and you can see the gears turning...she thinks she can do better with her modern ways. Strega Amalia immediate beats feet back home and shows up a few days later with three wagon's loaded down with her modern witchy machines and contraptions; as we all remember, Strega Amelia favors the "new" ways and Strega Nona favors the old ways...both valid for the women in question, but are Strega Amelia's ways for this town? Bambalona is outraged by Amelia's modern ways...wooing customers away with sweet treats and cappuccino and even more upset when all Strega Nona's customers turn to Strega Amelia and even Big Anthony signs on as her helper...but Strega Nona knows something Bambalona doesn't and blesses the arrangement. All seems to go well until Amelia has to leave for three days to fetch the rest of her stuff and leaves Big Anthony in charge...Strega Nona would have known better! Read and find out what happens to Strega Amelia and about all the silly and forgetful things Big Anthony does with her equipment! Another 5 star story from Tomie de Paola, Strega Nona Meets Her Match Indeed...it's told in the same simple yet timeless style as his other Straga Nona titles and we simply can't get enough of this trio and their silly adventures that always leave us with a smile and a wise lesson learned!

I love all of Tomie dePaola's books! His illustrations and stories are so rich and entertaining. My children have asked to read these books aloud again and again!

Stregna Nona (Grandma Witch) knows how to cure warts, headaches and love problems. How she approaches curing "competition in the workplace" is fascinating to both young and more mature readers...This story includes Strega Amelia and Big Anthony. Both characters are very interesting and amusing to read about. As Strega Nona says "sometimes the old ways may be the best ways" - especially in reading to our children.

Strega Nona Meets Her Match by Tomie dePaola

Wherein Strega Nona defeats her business competition by sending in a saboteur.

I was researching books that I might give to my niece and I came across this gem.

Strega Nona is a traditional healer in a little town in Calabria. Her friend Strega Amelia is a healer from over the mountain. Strega Amelia comes for a visit and sees what a good business Strega Nona has in the town and decides to compete with her. Strega Amelia says, "I see she still uses the old-fashioned ways too. Hmm, I'll have to think about this." Strega Amelia goes home and returns a week later, setting up her shop. She offers modern, effective remedies and "free sweets and coffee with every visit."

Strega Amelia is an instant hit! After a few weeks, everyone in the town has realized that Strega Amelia supplies better products and services than Strega Nona and Stella Nona's tired old business has dried up completely.

So what does Strega Nona do? She gets her helper, Big Anthony to infiltrate Strega Amelia's company. Then, when Amelia is away on business, Big Anthony finds his moment and sabotages Amelia's corporate image. At the height of his attack, he "forgets" how to operate the headache relieving machine and almost kills the mayor.

Strega Amelia returns the next day only to be run out of town. Strega Nona works her magic one last time and makes sure her fingerprints aren't on the crime.

And everyone lives happily ever after. (?!?!?!) Yes, it really plays out like that. This book sends a very bad message.

In the next Strega Nona book she gets even with her mean neighbor by framing her for a felony. Then Strega Nona orders a hit on the mayor. Hilarity ensues!

Strega Nona (Grandma Witch) is back again. And now nothing happens in the little town of Calabria. And the baker's daughter is learning to become a Strega. But un-like Big Anthony, she listens to people. So who do you think will get a job? Or if both Bambolona and Big Anthony both worked the same job, who would be fired? Big Anthony of course. In less he starts listening to people. One Day Strega Nona gets a letter in the mail it says. "Cara Strega Nona, I would like to pay you a visit. Would next week be convenient? Please let me know. Amore e baci - Love and kisses- Strega Amelia"
