Comfort and hope to sustain you

Nothing saps your physical, emotional, and spiritual strength quite like a cancer diagnosis--unless it is the energy-stealing treatments you may face in your fight against cancer. But you can find hope and renewal in the pages of Scripture and in the experience of someone who has been there.

In Strength Renewed, breast cancer survivor and registered nurse Shirley Corder combines encouraging personal stories with life-giving passages from the Bible to help you process your diagnosis and find encouragement along the way. These devotions can be read in order as you move through your cancer journey, but each devotion also stands on its own, so you can go directly to the entry that speaks to your need--right now.

You have a partner and a cheerleader in Shirley--and in God--on the rough road ahead. Let Strength Renewed lift you up as you travel.

Every pithy and compassionate meditation contains both encouragement and empathy that is sure to minister strength to those walking the rocky road of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Shirley Corder has walked that road and emerged changed but stronger. She knows whereof she speaks from both the medical side and the patient side. If you or someone you love is fighting the cancer battle, get them this book! I believe the gift will prove to be among the greatest acts of kindness you can do for them. I intend to obtain multiple copies and pass them out, not only to those dealing with breast cancer, but any kind of cancer.

From ants to eagles, nothing escapes the author's attention in this transparent spiritual diary through the valley. Her honesty and spiritual depth will encourage the reader, no matter the trial at hand. While the details focus on breast cancer and that particular journey, many of the meditations are pertinent to people going through other trials.

The scriptures she cited are the ones I fell back on after the tragic loss of three grandchildren. They are places I seek solace and comfort when trying to comfort the surviving mother who nearly died at the same time. And the search for meaning that we need to leave in the hands of God is the same for every trial in the believer's life.

I have no concept of how one gets through the trials of life without a faith in God. This book, Strength Renewed, gives the reader a means of establishing that relationship.

While specific to breast cancer and by extension to other cancer survivors, this book should not be neglected by anyone seeking to deepen a relationship with God. It is, perhaps, one of the reasons God allowed the author to go through this valley.

Well written, honest, and spiritually sound, I will be recommending this book and giving it to others.

Strength Renewed contains ninety short (two pages each) thoughts about surviving the journey through the valley of cancer. What author Shirley Corder learned during her experiences will help others. She relates major as well as small problems that impacted her life during treatment and recovery.

Strength Renewed will encourage those battling cancers of any kind and also family members and friends. Shirl speaks with truth, concern and honesty in this easily read book.

The meditations about the emotional impact of cancer on patients is especially helpful. Probably every patient has unexpected, conflicting feelings. They and the family need to know that's part of the often overwhelming process.

I met Shirley Corder of South Africa years ago in Maryland and was attracted by her effervescent, caring personality. As fellow writers and RN's, cancer survivors and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we both understand the roller coaster of cancer. We experienced, through the ups and downs, help from God that made the trip endurable and worth while. You can know that, also. Let Shirley Corder's insights in Strength Renewed help you.

If you don't know anyone with cancer, you likely will sometime in the future. This book is a valuable resource for families, patients, medical personnel, care-givers and spiritual advisors.

Strength Renewed is true to its title. Each meditation provides context within Shirley's life and what the Lord was teaching her. One feels they're getting to know Shirley by her easy-to-relate-to raw testimonies of the joys and agonies, ups and downs of her cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her transparency is refreshing.

Throughout the book she provides three thought provoking questions to help readers personally apply the meditations. She allows people to become part of her story, as if standing beside them with welcoming arms. The questions are presented in a sharing format, with her vulnerability inviting the reader's own in answering and knowing someone understands.

Short Scripture verses provide thoughts to cling to throughout the day, the perfect length to remember and use for encouragement.

This is an excellent book, written with compassion, compelling the reader to enter into their own personal story, and convicting them of the trap of invulnerability (a difficult facade to maintain throughout the journey.)

I was pleasantly suprised by this book. Around the time I received my kindle copy for review purposes, a very crucial member of our church leadership was losing her battle with cancer. Our church had journeyed with her for many years as she fought the battle for cancer on and off. I never had any idea just what was going on in the mind and heart of a cancer sufferer. That was until I read this book.

Never before have I seen a book so open and honest, and frankly quite BLUNT about the trauma of cancer. Even though I have never suffered from cancer, I actually got a lot out of it. Each small devotion centres around walking with the reader through the grief process that often comes with discovering one has cancer. Each devotion is not only real, but backed up with encouragements from Scripture.

"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

Corder says,

"When I received my diagnosis of cancer, I didn't know anything about eagles. I wanted to renew my strength, but how do you wait on anyone, even the Lord, when you're told you have cancer?

Over the following months, I learned much about eagles and even more about myself. I'm not naturally patient, but the eagle is, and so is the Lord. Gradually, I learned what it meant to wait on him, and each time I did, he renewed my strength."

Strength Renewed contains ninety meditations based on lessons I learned during my journey in the cancer valley.
The author points to the fact that while people have survived cancer without God, it is not preferable. Cancer has not caused her to doubt God.
