3.0 out of 5 stars Note the title - a basic resource for beginners, February 12, 2009
By Clark B. Timmins "q-25" (West Jordan, UT USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book suffers from an identity crisis--on the one hand it's a great resource for Crystal Reports 2008 basics for beginners; on the other hand it has little useful information for Visual Studio users. The book covers all the basics and lots of more advanced features of Crystal Reports 2008. The large-format pages and many visuals help present the material in an intelligible and useful way. The book's tone is friendly and accessible so that even non-technical users can understand the material. But that's not what a typical Visual Studio user is going to want!

The book's real value lies in the many exercises presented, and they cover a remarkable range of product features. However, the exercises focus almost entirely on using Crystal Reports 2008 as a stand-alone component--there is a notable lack of exercises demonstrating how the product integrates into the Visual Studio environment. Having said that, the exercises are clearly presented and use "real world" problems that teach useful principles. The book has an excellent index.

In conclusion, if you're a Visual Studio developer that wants to begin using basic Crystal Reports in the Visual Studio environment this will be a good resource. But if you're looking for a hard-hitting integration guide, this is not it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed, October 28, 2008

This book contains very elementary stuff ,, stuff that you can do using wizards.
It does NOT contain a single line of code behind, like ways to embed and pass values to a crystal reports template in a .net app

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for Crystal, June 24, 2009
Book is a very good starting point for those wanting to learn Crystal Reports. However, it has minimal relevance to Visual Studio environment. That is don't expect to learn how to use Crystal from within VS-2008.
