Whereas many "wanna-be biologist" psychologists have abandoned psychology in favor of chemistry, synapses and pharmaceuticals, it is refreshing to read the works of Richard S. Lazarus on the psychological and mental aspects of emotions and emotional life. Drawing upon decades of experimental and field research on the role of cognitive appraisal influencing emotional response, Lazarus provides a very readable synthesis on the stressful and life enhancing transactions, echoed in emotions, between person and environment. In short, emotions serve as messengers. As messengers, emotions serve a communicative function, a role emphasized by Darwin, signifying the outcomes of transactions through altered awareness, and passed on to others through compelling expression and reaction to the messages received.
