I have had this book a LONG time,,,,,and yes the styles are very much out of vogue ,,,but that is not the point of this book.
This book shows you from start to finish how to change necklines and do so many different things to a pattern that you can translate into today's patterns. I just reviewed the chapter on how to make placket collars as I am making my husband some golf shirts ,,,,but wanted a higher end fabric than Lands End had to offer and a perfect fit for him. I am taking a basic T shirt pattern and re doing it for him, getting HIS exact sleeve length and the 2 pockets he would like on the front vs only one ( pet peeve of his for many years) I do not get my fabric at JoAnnne's,,,, I order swatches from New York and other places to get a high end cotton,, but he is provided with exactly what he wants in fit and style. This book can show you how to take your favorite fitting dress or t top that maybe a U neck and make a V neck or vice versa. This is a learning book and I use it all the time to learn how to re shape things Great book,,,,and great ideas.

I took the Stretch and Sew "Basic 8" classes in the late '70s. It's been a while, so when I wanted to make a special t-shirt (featuring what she calls the cutest dog in the whole world) for my niece, and wanted a certain neckline trim, I knew what book I had to go hunting for.
If you took the Basic 8s, you might recall that they showed a number of variations that could be made with the S&S patterns. This book shows most, maybe all (heck, it's only been 30-some years), of those variations. The instructions are clear and well-illustrated; if I didn't screw it up, chances are, you'll be just fine. |
