24 of 26 people found the following review helpful By Jeffrey D. Sedlack on January 15, 2005
Format: Paperback
Father Aschenbrenner accomplishes a lot in this extraordinary volume. He is able to distill the wisdom of St. Ignatius Loyola for a modern audience. He is then able to take that sense, and give the reader a sense of the overwhelmind relevence and modernity that the Exercises offer the faithful of any age. This book should be terrific for one wondering if the Exercises might be right for them, for those feeling a calling to God, and as a wonderful review for anyone who has experienced the Exercises.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By D. power on October 15, 2008
Format: Paperback
The book explains a very complex but fascinating reality. The Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola who was the founder of the Society of Jesus and the catalyst for a great revolution in learning and holiness within the Catholic Church.
Fr Aschenbrenner takes what on paper is a very dry thing and puts flesh and blood on it.
He blows all the cobwebs of the centuries from the pages and reveals what is an earth shattering experience to which the Jesuits call others to know.
The book deals with very unique concepts that will not be encountered so easily in other spiritual traditions.
The Path that God showed Ignatius through his experiences is traced very well by the Author.
The reader will come to understand a lot of the reasons why the order was so successful in its mission to serve God and Pope.
The Exercises light a fire on the inside and this fire calls for contact with the outside .Never fully satisfied. The book brilliantly explains the meaning of reality in the life of Faith. It also does not shy away from the nitty gritty struggles we are all faced with and so should allow us all to learn a lot.It has a rich Theology that is never severed from human experience or the desire for holiness which alone makes it a rarity. of a book

The text provides an excellent overview of the Spiritual Exercises. The clear narrative makes the intended outcomes accessible to those who are new to the Jesuit world.
