About the Author

Bob Anderson is the author of the best-selling book, STRETCHING. After several years of exercising and stretching in his mid 20's, Bob developed a method of stretching that he found to be beneficial and that could be taught to anyone. In 1980 he and his wife, Jean, revised their self-published book STRETCHING with Shelter Publications and in 1988 Bob co-wrote this book, STRETCHING FOR WORKING AMERICA, with Sally Carlson, a disability cost management expert who has worked with large and small operations.

pg.10 Why Stretch? Stretching, because it relaxes your mind and tunes up your body, should be part of your daily life. You will find that regular stretching will do the following: Reduce muscle tension and make work easier. Help coordination by allowing freer and easier movement. Increase range of motion. Decrease the risk of injury (a strong pre-stretched muscle resists stress better than a strong un-stretched muscle). Improve mental alertness. Reduce anxiety, stress and fatigue. Improve circulation. Develop self-awareness. Allow you the opportunity to "feel better".

pg.13 Group Sequence: How do you start? On the job, at the start of the shift... before you begin your work. Meeting in an open room, in a small group (15-20 people)... with a trained leader. 20 stretches, in a ten-minute time frame... everyday. The following stretches are designed specifically for 10 minutes of pre-work "Group Sequence" stretching. Note each stretch has detailed instructions.

pg.25 Spontaneity on the job- Spontaneity...against the rules? It shouldn't be, not when it comes to stretching. ... 2-3 minutes here ... 30-40 seconds there, spontaneous stretching through the work day. Your time to reduce accumulated tension. Your time to reduce fatigue. Your time to help your body function with greater ease. The next page provides examples of "spontaneous stretching"...on the job. Take these examples and be creative; think of stretches you can do within your own job environment.
