It's not that far outside the box. The innovative Strida® 16" LT foldable bike is an incredibly convenient way to get around town. Ideally suited for commuting, it opens and folds in less than 10 seconds so you can bring it on a subway or bus (where permitted). The grease-free belt drive means there's no oily chain or gears and no stains!
The bike is great. BUT, you are screwed if anything goes wrong with it.
The Strida has very unique parts and therefore if even a small part breaks (in my case a small metal washer) you need to find a bike shop that is an official repair center in order for your warranty to be applied.
Living in NYC, this wasn't too big a problem for me, though it undoubtedly will be for people outside of a major city. My issue was waiting nearly 4 months for Strida to ship my local bike shop the necessary part. Adding insult to injury, they refused to cover the mechanic's fee (in this case, $70 dollars). So I lost out on riding the bike for the entire spring and had to eat a $70 dollar repair fee due to a tiny piece of metal coming loose.
Strida is owned by a Taiwanese company called Ming Cycle. The only way to get in touch with someone about repairs is to email Ming Cycle. Guess what- they don't respond to emails!
Bottom line, I can't recommend this bike to anyone, despite how much I enjoy riding it. If you are looking for a quality folding bike, I recommend a Dahon or Brompton because getting those repaired won't be an issue for your local bike shop.
I love my Strida. I bought mine in 2008. When my car was broken down I was actually a little sad when my car was repaired faster than I expected. I was using my Strida to get from bus stop to bus stop or just using it to travel all the way from town to my apartment (7 miles). People do look at you because it is a bit different looking bike. I actually got applause once when I unfolded it and rode away from the airport while others were waiting for taxis!
The best folding bike.. wheels anywhere when closed, no messy chains, lightweight and reliable easy to use folding mechanism... I have owned 4 different folding bikes and this is hands down my favorite
