4.0 out of 5 stars The most fun game I've played in a long time
I never played the original Strider, but I loved this game. Okay, so I could beat in under an hour, but I kept coming back for more. It is one of those games that you will return to after you beat it over and over again. It is almost too easy however, so it can be beaten in at least an hour. That is what keeps this game from getting five stars. Be warned that if you...

However, this game proves that games with okay graphics can sometimes be the most fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Magic Returns!, August 5, 2000

The original Strider for Genesis was what made me buy that system, and this game has all the magic of that one! The only thing keeping it from being a five is that in this age of videogames the length should be a lot longer! But if you are a Strider fan (or a fan of great videogames) you should buy this one! HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

OK, I've given this game a few days of intensive playing and must admit that it says something when you've had such high expectations for a game and it lives up to it! Somehow Capcom has managed to take their best game from the 80's (and probably their first truly great game) and convert it into a game that will impress game players of today. And surely the old platform jumpers and side-scrollers need this sort of rejuvenation.

As to the game itself: long time Strider fans will find all the old moves here along with a few new ones--namely dashing, a double jump, a special wall jump and now an aerial down-up move (not unlike the special moves in other Capcom side-scrollers, but here limited toan air attack.) The speed is obviously upped a few notches and the graphics are far improved, however this does not fully explain what makes Strider so amazing.

The truly new innovation here are the 3-D environments you move about in, while still being true to a 2-D game. These aren't just pretty 3-D rendered backgrounds. This is most noticable if you play the other Strider (Hien), who will often throw his projectiles off at guards far off in the background--guards who can also take pot-shots at you. Add to this that the environments are often breath taking and amazingly creative and you have a game that will bring back players over and over again (take for example the awesome ice-crawling opening to level 3.)

As far as length...this has been the point I've heard over and over again and dreaded that we'd have another 20 minute Strider game. Not true. If you play through the whole game (including level 0) it does take about an hour. Of course you'll want to improve that and you'll want to master the game so that you arn't getting killed all the time. Perhaps this needs a 5 continue limit for the people who are just going to plough through it and never play it again. There is definitely an incentive to beat each level without continuing (and this is not an easy task--even the fairly easy first level will not be beaten flawlessly without some skill and quick reflexes. Also, each level is littered with bonus items, giving good reason to explore every nook and cranny of the game. I am amazed over and over how many places I keep discovering.

Ultimately this game has a lot of replay value but only if you are the sort of person who likes to master a game and not just get to the end. Strider 2 is all about super-cool environments and a super-cool hero with action sequences that never fail to deliver. More so, most everything here can be gotten around without getting hit at all (for instance--the mine scene can be done without getting hit once though it will require exploration, experimentation and creativity. Thus, for those who still love this sort of game, Strider 2 is both an excellent return to form and a perfect utilization of the improved technology/programming.

I should also add that Strider 1 has been included on the bonus disc, and while this may just be too primitive for some people, to my sensibilities this remains one of the defining games of this genre and seems to hold up pretty well to its eleven year hibernation.

All in all, this is a must purchase for Capcom fans and fans of arcade style action games.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of THE best games for the Playstation!, August 29, 2006

This is one game that I can play over and over and not get tired of. The action is fast and furious. The controls are spot-on. This is how a video game should be made. The graphics is not the greatest but, hey, this is a 32-bit game. If you are a fan of arcade games, then you MUST get this one. I'm glad that I got it. This is game is short compared to other games but you can play it over and over. Also, you get the first Strider! My hat's off to Capcom for coming out with this one with a bonus game. This game must be rare because I had a hard time finding a copy that suited my collector's standards. Too bad they don't have this game on a next-generation console because I consider this one of Capcom's greatest games. So if you own a Playstation One, you owe it to yourself to get one.

No this is not that Strider Returns game made by US Gold. This is Strider 2 a game that saw a limited release in the arcades in the US because arcades were dying in the United States. It was released only on the PS1. It came packed with Strider an arcade pefect port of the arcade version. I got it for a decent price $35.
Strider greeat game for the time. I mean this is more balanced than the Genesis version gameplay wise like I land most of my jumps there's no slow down. Short game can be beaten in little over an hour you need to try I mean try to keep your cool during the 5th level getting to Grand Master Meio is a pain. 1 thing I guess that Capcom thought that the cold war was going to last another 60 years lol. Check out my review of the Genesis version of Strider
Strider 2 was a little upgrade and I was fortunate enough to play the arcade in the summer of 1999. This has a power up called the boost it's a bit better than the 1st game extremely short can be beaten in 35 minutes to an hour Fast paced game Basically Grandmaster Meio is back you need to go kill him.

It's about time Strider came back and I'm glad to see Capcom put some effort into this one. The control is dead-on and the graphics are great. If you wanna be cheap and use as many continues as you can, you'll beat it in half an hour. If you limit your continues, however, you'll find that this game is much harder to master. Buy it.

Strider 2 - Circa 2000

GOOD:
- Good/Tight controls
- Fast and fun gameplay
- Comes packed with original Strider

BAD:
- Pretty dated graphics even for when it was released
- Few levels make a short game

WILL IT FIT YOUR TASTE:
- 2D side-scroller, with liner levels, but backgrounds are 3D
- Straightforward classic arcade gameplay

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Strider
- Mega Man X4 (playing as Zero and not Mega Man)
- Castlevaina: symphony of the night

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Most levels are more like remakes of the classic Strider levels
- Unlock Strider nemesis (the other or "bad" Strider) after beating the game

This game is really fun. The game needs more levels. You could be the game in just 1 day. It has 2-D gameplay instead of 3-D gameplay. The background graphics look pretty good and the graphics are 2-D, but it's still good. Overall I recommend this game to fans of Strider and people who still like 2-D gameplay.
