I heard her while listening to World Cafe on NPR. If Mazzy Star was covering a Siouxie and the Banshees song while channeling Billie Holiday's heroin melancholy, you would wind up with this album. I mean that as a compliment!

I must admit that Goth is not my style. But I do think of myself as having eclectic musical tastes. I heard a bit of this on Sound Opinions and ordered the CD. It really exceeded my expectations.

Nika Roza Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, has a pretty amazing voice and this is a pretty amazing CD. The music is very dark. The lyrics are compassionate, even nurturing, but Zola's voice has basically no emotion in it. It's simply chilling. The music still manages to have some pretty decent pop hooks, which is probably why I was drawn to it.

Doubtless Zola Jesus has lots of fans who commonly respond positively to industrial/Goth/electronic genres. She also has at least one fan (me) who doesn't explore much within these genres but knows a gifted and unique artist when she hears one. Highly recommended.

I heard of this EP from the pitchfork review. "Night" captivated me, and for this price, I scooped it up immediately on release. As she says "It's good for your soul." Buy this EP and soar.

I hate to mention this but the connection is so obvious. Zola Jesus IS the new Siouxsie. This could be a bad thing but not here. These songs are fantastic and her voice is stunning! One of my favourite releases of 2010. Don't miss out and check out her other 3 releases....
