Editorial Reviews

CD reissue of this 1977 album from the Bluegrass legend. Earl Scruggs is best known as the banjo playing half of Flatt & Scruggs. Earl issued many solo albums throughout the 1970s, many with his group, The Earl Scruggs Revue, which featured Randy and Gary Scruggs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Version of Mandolin Wind - Anywhere August 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Banjo rock ain't necessarily my thing, but thankfully ole Earl is pretty much in the background here.
His able-bodied sons and Jody Maphis handle the lion's share on this 1977 release.
I give this album five stars pretty much for two songs - a re-working of the Sam Cooke chestnut "Bring It On Home To Me" and a sterling rendition of the Rod Stewart moldy nugget "Mandolin Wind."
I never was a particular fan of Mandolin Wind but the workout it gets here is simply sublime.
With an aching steel guitar solo at the end and a yearning vocal by Gary Scruggs, it's to die for.
I had an old worn out vinyl copy for years and it's finally on CD.
I say hooray.
