About the Author

CHRIS RYAN was born near Newcastle in 1961. He joined the SAS in 1984. During his ten years he was involved in  overt and covert operations and was also Sniper team commander of the anti-terrorist team. During the Gulf War, Chris was the only member of an eight-man team to escape from Iraq, of which three colleagues were killed and four captured. It was the longest escape and evasion in the history of the SAS. For this he was awarded the Military Medal. For his last two years he was selecting and training potential recruits for the SAS.

Love Chris Ryan's style as opposed to the embellished, drawn-out ramblings of Andy McNab. Ryan is able to move past technical detail and focus a little more on characters. While military junkies probably feed off of McNab's military experience, knowledge and gore, Ryan keeps the rest of us entertained with his up-front, fast and character driven narratives.

I was interested in the plot of Strike Back long before the tv show came out and was very pleased with the book. It has plenty of twists and turns to keep you entertained without loosing your interest or revealing the resolution before finishing the book.

The only drawback is that the book resembles most of Ryan's other works and ends abruptly.

Like the other reviews say, this is a great, little action book with a lot of punch. While you might not pick it up and thumb through it in years to come, if you're into military intrigue, it's definitely worth your time.

I purchased this book after watching the "Strike Back Origins" series on Cinemax. I enjoyed this book, ( only available in the UK) but was surprised at it's brevity. The lack of basic military policies & procedures was disappointing. However, all things being equal, I enjoyed this book quite a bit & would recommend it to others. I would also heartily recommend that it be made into a Kindle edition!! I was forced to buy this paperback (eeewww!) from a book seller that subcontracts with Amazon . This bookseller imports books from the UK & it took approximately 3 1/2 weeks to arrive. Cheers!

This book is notable for its sensitive portrayal of what can happen when a solider returns from war and struggles to cope with his experiences, ending up at rock bottom. However it is also a comeback story as he meets his estranged daughter and is offered a way out of oblivion and back to self respect and self worth. Along the way of course there is brutal action, twists and turns and a chase at breakneck speed. A great read and one of his best.

You know how people always say "The movie wasn't as good as the book"? Does not apply here. "Strike Back" (the book) was good enough to be made into a good British TV series and then an even-better Cinemax series, but by itself it's pretty bad. It reminded me of the old Mack Bolan books, where reality usually took a back seat to the action.

The series used basic plot of the book, but expanded the scope of the story and added all the Section 20 cyber stuff. Here Porter—railroaded out of the Regiment for apparently getting three fellow soldiers killed on a mission—spends vodka-soaked years on the streets of London, estranged from his family; his eventual victory is all the more rewarding (emotionally and financially) for it.

Chris Ryan is quite the prodigious writer. According to his bio, he's former SAS; however, this book makes me think maybe he wasn't paying attention in class. He continually refers to magazines as clips, and he has no concept of human anatomy. And instead of just writing that a couple of guys got shot and went down, he spends two sentences describing how bullets "slammed" into spinal cords and bodies were "shredded."

It's a fast read, though, so if you want something pulpy to read on the beach, you could do slightly worse.

A grown up kid's own adventure
Predictable but gripping. Where the good guy wins and saves the fair damsel.
An exhilarating escape for the reader and the hero

I watched the Cinemax series based on this book. The first season of the series follows this book closely. Not particularly challenging but fun.

1st Chris Ryan book that I have read, will be downloading more very soon. The book shows how one man's life can be ruined by the actions of another.
