Book Description

April 1, 2001 9 and up
Coached and nurtured by their father, Bob and Rex Whitman are promising high school baseball stars. Their world turns upside down when they learn their father has died suddenly while umpiring another high school baseball game. Bob assumes the role of the eldest in the family and Rex falls apart. As the family moves through the rituals of death, Bob and Rex recall their father's lessons, bringing both pain and healing.

Each chapter is preceded by a quotation about baseball from a famous person and gives readers pause: "Slump? I ain't in no slump. I just ain't hitting."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-This heartrending story of anger, sadness, loneliness, and responsibility faced by family members is told through the eyes of the oldest sibling, 17-year-old Bob, after his father's death. The carefully crafted narrative includes a graphic of an umpire's brush and a baseball to represent the father and his two sons along with a foreshadowing quote about the game or one by a well-known player. Baseball lessons guide the brothers as they struggle with the insensitivity of others, sibling rivalry, and, finally, acceptance and moving on as each son deals with his pain in a different way. The quickly unfolding tale will hold readers to the very end with wrenching dialogue, flashbacks that help understand the characters' behaviors and their relationships with their father, and descriptive scenes from baseball games and practices. Many readers will find that this is a difficult book to put down.
