If you've never had a Lazer hand auger before, get one...just maybe not this one. I have a 6" 'regular' Lazer (all metal), and a 4" Synthetic Lazer. Let me compare:

BLADES
-Both are extremely sharp, and extremely efficient. Can't go wrong with either.

EASE OF DRILLING A HOLE
-When the hole is about complete, that last turn is smooth with the Synthetic auger, no catch whatsoever. The regular Lazer will need a final firm tug to break through.

-Do you get less tired drilling a hole with the Synthetic auger? No. Any fatigue you feel drilling a hole with either auger is tied to the circular motion of your arm. The weight of the auger is resting fully on the ice so both augers drill equally well.

PRACTICAL USE
-Fishing in near freezing or warmer temps and on less than 18" of ice, they perform equally well.

-If fishing in very cold temps, both will get ice built up on them as more holes are drilled. Flexing the Synthetic is not possible if the ice buildup is too great. In contrast metal conducts heat, so placing the metal auger very near my Heater Buddy will melt the ice build-up. When ice has built up heavily on the Synthetic it takes a lot longer to clear. Oh ya, and the Synthetic blade guard does not go on nearly as easily (or at all) when there is MUCH ice build up. The regular Lazer never has a problem as its strap has a wider adjustment range.

-When drilling through ice I give the metal auger a hard yank out of the hole when done. This clears most of the slush from the hole. Since the Synthetic auger flexes, if feels like it's set in concrete on deep holes. With deep ice I need to turn it out of the hole a bit before I'm able to pull. This, of course, leaves more slush to clear.
