2.0 out of 5 stars Very high value for a very unique product. Quality NOT assured., March 6, 2011
This review is from: Striker 00-103 Folding Multi-Blade Utility Knife (Misc.)

Warning: This review is absurdly long (but informative!).

========================================================

This is quite possibly THE most unique utility blade I've ever seen. It has a blade, file, and hammer. Perfect for construction! You know what else it's good for? Fossil collecting. That's what I've been using my knife for. That's also what I'll be pulling most of my experience from. While it has been adequate in role, I have to give it huge deductions in terms of quality, fit and finish, as well as attention to detail. I'll be going over them briefly in the following categories:

Weight/Size:
Let me sum it up - This knife is extremely chunky. It weighs in at 6 oz and is nearly 3/4 in thick. It's definitely not comfortable to put into any pocket in my opinion. However, that weight is justified to some extent because one needs the weight in order to be able to hammer things.

Construction
Lock - HORRIBLE. By far one of the worst liner locks I've ever seen. When I got it NEW in the box, it already had a lot of side to side wiggle(play) in it. On top of that, the liner on mine has started to bend because the screws have loosened to the point where it constantly hits the metal spacer on the side of the knife.
Screws - Also horrible. Not only are they very low quality screws, some of mine came stripped!
Hammer - To be honest, I can't tell if the metal used in the hammer portion of the knife is different from that of the handle. I just know that it has withstood all of the chiseling I've done, which was light to medium duty. My advice would be to hammer it the way it is shown in the videos. If you try it any other way, I've found that the hammer portion literally comes apart.

Design
Absolutely horrible. The file rubs against the area where the extra blade is retained. The back of the file rubs against the liner. The extra blade doesn't even retain unless you do something about it. In my case, I just taped the blade to add that extra bit of width and I also bent the metal retaining it with a pair of pliers to get that tight fit. The only redeeming factors to the design are that you can switch blades without any tools and (I can assure you this is pure coincidence) that it retains the Lenox Gold utility blades in their fully extended positions. This is always useful for that extra bit of cutting edge.

Deployment
The design of the thumb studs is horrible. It really doesn't grip your thumb at all. The ONLY redeeming factor to this category is that they included Teflon washers, which provides a smoother opening.

Ergonomics
Not the best but certainly not the worst. I use the bottom of the file to get a closer grip on the blade if I'm doing very delicate fossil prep work. However, I have to give the knife huge hits on the fact that the handles aren't rounded!!! There are quite a few sharp corners that would be otherwise uncomfortable when cutting something thick like carpet. Though that's where the Lenox Gold blades would come in I suppose :)

Pocket clip
The pocket clip on this thing is by far the loosest I've ever seen. There's practically no tension between my knife and my pocket. I bet it'd fall out of my pockets in a day if I were a construction worker.

Value
This isn't your cheap dollar store utility knife. I suppose one can consider this product in the price of a higher end utility knife. However, is it worth it? It certainly fits the bill in terms of uniqueness, but unfortunately not in fit and finish or design. Because it has no competitor and is such a unique product, I listed it in the description as having high value. Do I think it's worth it? Nope.

Summary:
Pros:
- Unique product. Almost perfect for fossil prep
- Hammer has withstood all the tasks I've needed to do (light-medium duty chisel work)
- Teflon washers for smoother deployment
- Holds Lenox Gold blades in their fully extended positions

Cons:
- Chunky. Way too big to put in your pocket in my opinion
- Horrible construction, design, and fit&finish
- Non-functional thumb stud design
- Many sharp corners on the knife. Uncomfortable
- Lock is horribly designed and executed
- Pocket clip is way too lose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very good., August 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Striker 00-103 Folding Multi-Blade Utility Knife (Misc.)
Pros-
Solid frame
Multiple tools in one

Cons-
Blade lock is very poorly designed
Blade storage, the blades fall out of storage during use.

Purchased this knife a week ago for work use. After 3 cuts the blade in the storage area came flying out on the fourth cut. It hit flat and wasn't able to penetrate me shirt, if the point had hit though it would have left a nice stab wound.

The blade lock is just a piece of sheet metal with a tab. Push the tab out away from the knife and the blade will come out. The one I received requires only about a 16th of an inch gap between the face and the tab for the blade to come free (notice how they never show it in any of their advertising). Cutting a thick object with it would probably pull the blade free.

It doesn't matter how many features a tool has if it isn't safe to use. I can not recommend this product. Instead I would recommend Gerber Superknife 22-00532 SK Edge Aluminum Folding Utility Knife, Silver or Sheffield 12331 Heavy Duty Lock-back Utility Knife

1.0 out of 5 stars Knife looks good only on a picture., February 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Striker 00-103 Folding Multi-Blade Utility Knife (Misc.)
I'm working in a construction business that's why i bought this knife. Now I know that was a bad mistake. Knife looks good only on a picture, the description is also impressive but in the real life it's different. Blade locking mechanism is bad, blade pops out every two three longer cuts You need to be careful because if not You can cut off Yours fingers. Also the blade storage is very badly designed to get a new blade takes forever and it's hard.
