Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Striker is proud to introduce the newest hand tool to the Striker product line, the Striker Mechanical Carpenter Pencil. The Striker pencil is a revolutionary mechanical carpenters' pencil that is quickly replacing the traditional carpenters' pencil on the job site. There has been almost no innovation to the traditional carpenters pencil since the 17th century, despite the fact that carpenters' pencils are used by nearly all trades in the construction industry, including DIY, on a daily basis. If all your other tools evolved as slowly as your primary marking devise, you would all be pounding in nails with a rock. No more sharpeners, utility knives or broken pencils. The Striker pencil allows carpenters to make crisp, sharp lines right out of the packaging. When more lead is needed, simply press the cap of the pencil to advance the lead. Striker knows that professionals on the job site demand that their tools be designed and built extremely tough and rugged. The Striker Pencil is just that. The body of the pencil is Thick-Bodied, High-Impact ABS. The Striker pencil is designed with as few parts as necessary in order to eliminate jamming due to saw dust, dirt and grime. The Striker pencil is loaded with DURA LEAD. Dura Lead is 18-percent thicker than traditional lead and lasts 2-3x longer. It has a series of patented grooves which create a positive lock with the jaws of the Striker pencil. This ensures that the lead will not slip into the pencil. Additionally, Dura Lead is a resilient mixture of Clay and Graphite, not harmful lead.Researched, designed and tested by professionals, Striker products provide users with functional, innovative solutions. They are engineered for reliability and performance in demanding work environments.

Thought this was great for the first week, then I saw it at Home Depot under their name for less than half of the price of Amazon. Currently being sold in HD stores for $1.99. Lead seems to not mark well... almost as effective as using a pen rather than a pencil. Meh.

I've had this about 2 weeks. In that period, I regularly grabbed for my trusty carpenter's pencil - far more than the Striker.

Even of a sound concept, its design leave much to be desired. Like its jaws - with an accidental jolt or twist whilst scribing lines/layouts, they give way. And cause the lead to retract into the pencil body.

I'll think again twice before purchasing another pair - except as a Gift.

i like the idea of a mechanical carpenter's pencil but there are a lot of bugs to work out in the design. if you push too hard the "dura-lead" either breaks or gets pushed back into the pencil. the part of the pencil that grips the lead should be stronger and support the lead inside the pencil more so that it won't break off inside so easily.

Bought this pencil hoping to use the clip to keep attached to my pocket and that part works OK. The concept for this device is great, however the execution and construction could have been more thought out. The soft plastic tip gave way to the pressure of marking long lines. This pencil worked good for marking plywood for about two days. I could imagine this product getting 5 stars if they had used a metal clamping tip.

Boy, did I want to like the Striker mechanical carpenter pencil! The concept made sense, solid mechanical pencils have been around in the art / design world for ages, and (for a layman) the construction couldn't be all that complicated. Well, after several weeks of (sometimes forced) use, I'm hardly enamored with this pencil. The body of the Striker is solid, however the (lead) gliding- and holding mechanism is weak resulting in the lead pushing back into the Striker all too easily. Frustrating. While sharpening may be (slightly) inconvenient with a traditional carpenter pencil, the pencil (and lead) in fact will take more abuse (or, at the very least, decent pressure on the lead). While I do not intend to return the Striker, it is unlikely to get much action in the future.

I'm a construction worker and have been for years now. I thought this pencil would finally be the end of whipping out my utility knife and sharpening my own pencil....but boy was I wrong. By far the worst pencil I have ever used for work. For sitting at home drawing on paper it works perfect. But when it comes to making definitive marks on standard/treated lumber it is absolutely worthless. The smallest amount of pressure applied to the led forces it to retract back into the pencil shaft. I used this pencil for about 3 minutes and threw it into the trash can. Total waste of money

Poor design, poor leads! As stated in other reviews, over charging on Amazon. The pencil is not mechanically designed for construction or DIY use. The lead can only be put in to the pencil one way or it will slip when pushed on! The lead is not dark enough when drawing with the mech pen. I dropped my spare lead in the spare lead container, Lead inside broke into useless pieces. If you do not constantly sharpen the end by rubbing to get a sharp edge, you can be off by as much as 1/8th of an inch, measure twice, or you will never cut once! So now I carry carpenters pencil and a sharpener on my belt.
