Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-A collection of easy-to-learn string figures and games. After a brief history of the art, Darsie begins with a simple figure and progresses to those that transform from one shape into another. Additional chapters include games for two people and mystifying tricks. Step-by-step directions accompany the clear photographs of hands manipulating strings of different colors against pastel backgrounds. In comparison, Belinda Holbrook's String Stories (Linworth, 2003), illustrated with black-and-white photographs, is a collection of tales accompanied by string figures and shapes. Darsie's attractive book may fill a gap in some collections.

This book is so complicated! The illustrations are OK, but the text is terrible. My daughter (11) ordered this for herself and was excited to get the book. She has a Klutz book on string games that she loved (and played with for months!), so she thought this would be perfect to further her skills. She was very disappointed in this book. Here is an example of the text on page 15... "Hook index fingers down over the upper far thumb string, then down on the far side and back up on the near side of the two lower far thumb strings. Catch the lower thumb strings and extend index fingers." This step is from one of the figures classified as "Easy" and is the first string figure in the book.

Due to product description, which at the time of my purchase said included TWO strings, I am pretty unhappy to have received the String Games book (which while good enough in itself)without ANY strings included. Feel like I got ripped off, especially since the current item description doesn't mention anything at all about receiving strings.

This is not the book for a beginner. It does not explain things clearly, especially not for an 8 year old girl trying to learn string games for the first time. It is more suitable for someone already familiar with these games, but even then I was not impressed.

I was so confused by this, because I too thought the string was included. This is just so annoying, as this is a gift and I only just realized the string is missing. (I thought it was in the box, but what I had seen was actually a piece of the packaging - learned my lesson there to slow down a bit when verifying contents!!) The other reviews I read prior to purchasing mention the included string, and I understand now that the reviews may have been placed with the wrong product. Argh!

So, I've ordered the separate string which of course will arrive after Christmas. Double-Argh!!

Looking through the book it does look a bit tough for a child, so I am a wee bit concerned about comprehension; but it does look fun and impressive. I had to give this a 3 because it appears to have potential...but I won't really know until the string arrives. :(

Maybe a good book for someone older, but way to difficult for an 8 year old.

This book does seem slightly advanced for the 8 year old I purchased it for, but she's a good reader and I'm sure she can get some help with it if she needs it. I flipped thru some pages before wrapping it and tried my hand at Jacob's ladder, I'm a little rusty at string games, but I loved that it had colorful pic's and step by step instructions. This book is LOADED with different games and things to make.

My daughter has grown up playing string games so we thought this book would be perfect for her. The book was very good with a lot of different string games. (They have been listed by another reviewer so I won't list them out.)

My daughter was 7 when we bought this book. She was able to do some of the easier string games without a lot of help. Some of the more difficult ones she needed help with and was unable to do them by herself.

This is the kind of book where you learn one trick, work for a while to master it, then go back and try another one. If you try to sit and just work your way through the book all at once, I think you might find it moves in difficulty much faster than you might like.

Well worth the money.
Enjoy.
