4.0 out of 5 stars A 311 fan's must have!
This instrumental compilation of 311 songs dating back to their self-titled album is a great listen! Although the lyrics in 311's tracks are a very intrical piece to their overall vibe and style, the String Quartet does a great job of capturing the core of 311's sound. A good buy if you are a 311 junky! Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool, but rushed
I'm the more hardcore 311 fan you can find in a 50 mile radius. And i very much enjoy listening to this album... but I feel that they did not spend enough time on production. The instruments are played alright, but you will find numerous mistakes and awkward tempo paces at times. They also messed up the timing on parts of "seems uncertain" big time. I still...

This compilation of 311 songs dating back to their self titled album is a very good listen! Yes the lyrics are an intrical part of 311's overall vibe and amazing sound, but this instrumental tribute really is worthy of listening to. The String Quartet did a great job of reliving and caputuring 311's various styles. Check this CD out if you're a 311 junky!

The instruments are played alright, but you will find numerous mistakes and awkward tempo paces at times. They also messed up the timing on parts of "seems uncertain" big time. I still listen to this album all the time and am happy to have it in the collection, but they could have done ALOT better. Ive listened to these guy's tributes to other bands, and the production seems A LOT better. Oh well. If you're a hardcore 311 fan DEF. add this to the collection, its not total crap. If you're just a casual music listener, don't get this album, get the real 311 albums first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Assume Anything From This Album!, May 17, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: String Quart Tribute to 311 (Audio CD)
When I first heard someone talking about this album, I thought they were joking. No way could 311 songs be played by a string quartet and sound good. Boy, I was wrong. My fiance convinced me to buy this CD (since we are both huge 311 fans), and as soon as I heard the first song (Amber) begin to play, I was amazed. Every song on the album sounds UNBELIEVABLE! If you are a fan of 311, you need to buy this CD right now. If you are not a fan, you still need to buy it. We were so captivated by the CD that we are going to have the DJ play it during dinner at our wedding reception this August. Our guests won't know what hit them! Peace!

I love the string quartet arrangements and performances on this CD. 311 is my favorite rock band, and I also love classical music and have string quartet CDs by Mozart, etc. This is a great mix of two of my favorite styles of music. I found myself singing the lyrics to all of the songs on this CD. There are ten songs - Amber, Creatures (For a While), Down, Beautiful Disaster, Seems Uncertain, All Mixed Up, You Wouldn't Beleive, Other Side of Things, Come Original, and Transistor. I would like to hear Do You Right, Homebrew, Lucky, Purpose, Rub A Dub, Stealing Happy Hours, Freeze Time, Use of Time, Beyond the Grey Sky, and Sometimes Jacks Rule the Realm, amongst others, performed in this style. I hope they make a second 311 string quartet CD. The best song on the album in my opinion is Beautiful Disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, April 25, 2004

You wouldn't think so, but 311's music makes the transition to strings suprisingly well. Any 311 fan would be foolish not to buy this incredible album. The cover of Beautiful Disaster might be one of the greatest things I've ever heard.

If your a 311 fan this is a must own. It's really cool to hear their songs being played like this. If your not a 311 fan, you should still check it out for a new take on rap rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, July 4, 2004

I read the reviews on this site before buying the album, and after listening to it I couldn't help but smile. I was so wrapped up in the music, you really realize how many layers of instruments go into the songs that you may not hear on 311's albums, and that's really cool. There's no way anyone could say 311's music is linear or repetitive, and this album really shows that. It's a great album, especially for the 311 fan, because it is simply amazing hearing 311's songs done only with strings. If you get a chance, do buy this album. I did, and don't regret it a bit.
