Deftones done beautifully,
By Jon Hughes "wakeupjon" (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The String Quartet Tribute to Deftones (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for a while now, but haven't come across one single review of it anywhere - so here goes!
Deftones is a band of many sounds - heavy, melodic, soft, aggressive, but somehow manage to come out on top as one of the most imaginary bands in the music industry, always pushing the limits of originality. With this string quartet tribute to them, you're able to see just how beautiful they are with a different light shed on them. Whether it's a softer version of "RX Queen" or an intense rendition of "Engine No.9," the album never loses sight of the sheer beautiful surrounding Deftones, but yet magnifies it with string quartet instruments. If you'd like to introduce Deftones to a friend or family member that isn't too keen on their screamy vocals, you might want to use this as a gateway drug.

One of the best "String Tributes",

I have heard quite a few of these "String Tribute" type CDs and this is easily one of the best. This is a very stripped-back recording and hearing the woodiest-sounding cello belt through some Deftones tunes was a revelation, and made me drag out my copy of White Pony again and appreciate it on a whole new level.
I don't play classical instruments so can't comment on the musicianship, but the arrangements here convey the "quartet" feel successfully and make for a very moody, dark, furious album. I rate it highly in its own right.
