Excellent sound, supurb performances., February 2, 2008
This review is from: String Quartets Complete (Audio CD)
An extensive comparison -- quartet by quartet -- of this set with those by the Shostakovich Quartet and the Eder Quartet can be read online at The DSCH Journal. In general, all three receive glowing recommendations, and I would urge anyone seriously interested in this music to go to that site.
In brief let me say that this account reminds me of the Fitzwilliam offering on Decca, with even better sonics. It is a real bargain, and all the quartets can be had with one purchase, while the equally fine Eder recordings must be purchased separately. Will Naxos ever 'face the music' and offer the Eder recordings in a single box?
Meanwhile, a newcomer to this music (or a veteran looking for a second or third set) would do well to have these recordings at hand. Here is great music in uniformly supurb performances, with possibly the finest recorded sound available.
