5.0 out of 5 stars Heil Humperdinck!... May 6, 2012

Zerging' in Dunst
Das heil'ge röm'sche Reich,
Und bliebe gleich
Die heil'ge deutsche Kunst!
--Hans Sachs, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Humperdinck studied with Lachner, Rheinberger, and ultimately, Wagner with whom he seems to have established a special rapport.

Parallel to the case of Fauré, Humperdinck essayed his only string quartet near the end of his artistic career c.1920.

Humperdinck's C-major Quartet is quite brief and in three movements. Generally its style and ambience speak of Brahms in his most relaxed and congenial mood.

T'other objects on this disc of chamber music hale from substantially earlier in Humperdinck's oeuvre c.1875. They all share his gift for folkish gestures within pleasant melodies.

The G-major Piano Quintet in three large movements is quite a substantial work of thirty minutes duration. It's nicely turned out with a light touch: the central Adagio is a moving deeply-felt piece in memoriam to Humperdinck's little sister sadly lost at the sunny age of seventeen.
Like the later String Quartet, the Quintet is nicely scored with a real sensitivity for chamber timbres and excellent balance between instrumental voicing--techniques possibly acquired from the aforementioned lessons with Lachner and Rheinberger.
