I have to admit, such recordings that actually have strings in them and the more classical goth twist to them are excellent. But that's about it. I have to admit, such recordings that actually have strings in them and the more classical goth twist to them are excellent. But that's about it. The "original" recording is horrible, it sounds NOTHING like an Evanescence song. Then there's such songs as "Going Under" that are just HORRIBLE! It really puts Evanescence down a knotch if you aren't a bit of a die-hard fan (like me). The beginning of Bring Me To Life before the cellos get at it is by far the best part of the "rock" songs they tried to re-do. And I won't even touch Tourinquet. My Immortal, which has violins in the background on the original recording and the piano, is okay. The cellos could be arranged better and the use of musical techniques in one of the cellos (I believe) could be tweaked to sound more vocal (at the moment they don't). Imaginary is well done, and I have to admit that it sounds pretty close to the original Evanescence recording. Haunted is also pretty good, the use of the "rock viola" (as they put it) was good, since it brings the original track into this CD more. The rest of the CD - final track aside - is fine.
I don't suggest getting it if you don't like Evanescence that much. It's definately for hard core fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Different Work, June 11, 2004

I would imagine this work was inspired by, and therefore a tribute to, Evanescence. It certainly is not an attempt to do the same songs with different orchestration. They take off on the melodies but play pieces unique to the character of the instruments. If you like string quartets and like the melodies you will find this intriquing and interesting. Otherwise not.

I honestly think that this is not as horribly done as everyone else seems to consider it. As a part of an orchestra myself, I personally adore anything and everything strings, but granted this quartet doesn't nessecarily do justice to the sounds of Evanesence. The lower strings (particularly the base & cello) overpower the violias and both violins. If they had five more of each higher string, everything would have probably turned out a ton better.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Perfect Imperfection..., November 29, 2003

I will admit that this was not perfect but what in this world is? I didn't really enjoy the second track (Bring Me To Life), for the timing seemed off and the instruments slightly out of tune, plus I did not much like the way the metal viola was played. I DID, however, enjoy many of the remaining tracks and thought it was a great attempt at making something beautiful.

Also one must wonder if the intruments being slightly out of tune, or slightly out of harmony, which is more likely, was not an attempt by the artist to portray Evanescense's dark and slightly twisted demeanor. I, personally, think it would make sense, but you never know, as artists are strange creatures indeed...

I guess I should add that if you do not like classical music than you'd be better off not getting this CD. Fans of Pop and Rock will cringe when they hear this CD, and it is also not for everyone who likes classical either, for the harmony is not perfect, however, fans of the original album should know that neither is Evanescence's harmony... It's just been glamoured over to make it sound better (anyone ever heard them live?)

Personally, when I heard String + Evanescence I was thrilled, and since getting it the CD has grown on me. Track 5 (Imaginary) is one of my favorites. I also use the CD for Karaoke purposes...

2.0 out of 5 stars Anemic, Disappointing, Could Have Been Better, May 18, 2004
This review is from: String Tribute to Evanescence (Audio CD)
I've listened to this album for about an hour, listening to all offered songs. My first impression is that it's not a true quartet--they have slight percussion, and a guitar is featured on a couple of the songs for some reason. The bass instruments are much too loud and overpower the high-pitched instruments. These compositions would have been fabulous with a full orchestra; with only four instruments and no intricacy whatsoever, you basically have two sets of duets. It makes for a highly uninspiring, yawn-worthy album. I've heard better at a crafts fair. I am a voracious Evanescence fan but at its heart this CD is only vaguely Evanescence-inspired; it has very little to do with the band's music other than the melody and half-hearted accompanyment by four not particularly talented musicians.

1.0 out of 5 stars That was sad, November 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: String Tribute to Evanescence (Audio CD)
Wow, I must say that I was suprised at how bad that was! The harmonies were just horrible! I closed my eyes and invisioned a 4th grade quartet playing unrehearsed songs. It wasnt the worst that they could have done, but I wouldnt recommend trying to any worse.

My conclusion: dont but it unless you have money to throw away. Its not worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for any Evanescence & classical fans., August 2, 2004
This review is from: String Tribute to Evanescence (Audio CD)
I bought this CD and think it is amazing! The music is all instremental, so unfourtunetly you loose Amy Lee's amazing vocal talent, but the music is re-writen and is so strong. It still holds all the passion that was in the original songs. Most of the tracks on the CD are near to the original except the musicians who play it add thier own touch and spin to the songs. Nothing is edited to the point where it is nothing like the originals. Everything holds true, just thrown into a new way of being played. Amazing, and a great buy.

absolutely horrible--instrumenets blare off-key and out of time.

lack of vibrato makes the lines fall flat, not to mention that there are huge gaps in the layers of harmonies that glare at the listener.

Don't waste your money on this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, they tried..., September 20, 2005
This review is from: String Tribute to Evanescence (Audio CD)
This CD is ok, some of the songs are in the wrong key (Going Under, and some others), but they tried. I mean, I can picture Evanescence's music being played classically better than most other bands...

4.0 out of 5 stars Evanescence In a Different Light, July 31, 2005
This review is from: String Tribute to Evanescence (Audio CD)
Imagine Fallen being instrumental and played with strings instead of the usual piano and guitars that accompany it. Many will dislike this album because the lack of Amy Lee's voice, which greatly surrounds the magic of Evanescence, but the excellent playing of the two violas and cellos, compensate for it. The notes are directly on target from the original music. If you want to hear Evanescence's songs preformed in a different light, this is the perfect solution. The whole CD captures the same magic Evanescence has portrayed, but in a different and unique way. You do have to have some appreciation for classical music to like this, but once you adjust to it, it is a perfect listen to entertain fans until the release of the next album.
