Suspend all your cynicism, turn down the lights and bathe in this lush, sweeping, sentimental album of Cannonball, backed by Bill Russo's strings. You will hear echoes of Charlie Parker's "with strings" albums, while appreciating Cannonball's own mastery of the alto and the ballad.

A tough CD to rate because it combines a very good LP ("Strings") with one of Adderley's worst ("Jump for Joy"). "Strings" is very tuneful with solid Cannonball, especially on "A Foggy Day" and "Street of Dreams." But for me "Jump for Joy" is the worst LP Adderley ever made (up to the Capitol years, which is a whole other story): Russo's arrangements are not so hot, the added strings do nothing, and nothing seems to jibe.

The first album on this CD is a very pleasing, calm and tuneful. The Ballads played "Cannonball" Adderley in its usual lyric manner are apropos emphasized by the string orchestra. I think this album approaches amazingly for rest or romantic meeting. The Second album is a remake of Duke Ellington album. Honestly, I don't like pure Duke. But songs in this album are great. They arranged beautifully by Bill Russo. Cannonball's soloes get new lightness and liberty of improvisation - he became true alto sax Master. When you hear this album, you became vigorous and you awake to live again.
