5.0 out of 5 stars Season Six is a Winner!, November 13, 2009
This review is from: Top Chef Season 6 (Amazon Instant Video)
I love how serious the competitors are this season. Annoying personalities are kept to a minimum. That said, there is drama in the form of a nicely portrayed sibling rivalry (Voltaggio brothers); Eric Ripert has a protege in the group (Jennifer); and don't let appearances fool you because there's real talent coming from the "hillbilly" who is well-spoken and truly understands rich, comforting flavor (Kevin). But for the most part, these are professionals who help each other out without forgetting that they are competing against each other - that competitive tension is always there - and it works!

Last season was fantastic! It was like a competitive party game with the fun personalities of Fabio, Stefan and Carla. Great chemistry there. But this season is a bit more intense - and I think a lot of fans enjoy this just as much. There are some really big names thrown into this season - Thomas Keller (French Laundry, etc.) for one. Congrats Top Chef for pulling that off! Daniel Boulud made another appearance (always appreciated because he is Daniel Boulud). Nigella Lawson did a first-time stint as a judge. She looked somewhat lost, but I'll chalk it off to jetlag, plus the fact that she had to shoot a scene in bed for a breakfast in bed quickfire. And for entertainment, Natalie Portman hosted a dinner.

I'm glad that Padma is still the lovely host of the show - she really adds sparkle. Love the stunning fashion element she brings. Toby is back - less ascerbic, a bit more subdued - but definitely welcome. I used to like Tom Colicchio, but it seems he has withdrawn over the last several seasons. It reads as smugness, but maybe it's something else - can't figure it out. But there's plenty happening to keep us entertained and glued to the competition.

Great job Top Chef! Seasons 5 and 6 deserve top marks for fun and intensity. Don't be confused if people are a bit more quiet in their reviews - they're just busy happily watching the show.
