Lady Saw the Queen of Dancehall,
By
This review is from: Strip Tease (Audio CD)
Even though Lady Saw has not released her own album in 6 years, she has been on other projects to make sure we do not forget the Queen of Dancehall. Finally she is back, and Lady Saw is hot, hot, hot, hot!!! I had never heard of Lady Saw until I happen to catch a video she was in with Beenie Man, and Sean Paul performing a song called Boss Man. I paid even more attention when she did the song Underneath it all with No Doubt. I knew I would like her after I bought her best of compilation, so when I heard about the release of Striptease I rushed to get my copy. If you are a Lady Saw fan you must have this album in your collection. Lady wrote (or co-wrote) all but one song, and she is also Executive Producer of the album.
1. Intro 2. I've got your man 3. Man is the least 4. Do me better 5. Move your body featuring Voicemail 6. Striptease 7. Coming Over 8. Cocky Liquor (skit) 9. Pretty Pu$$y 10. Loser featuring Cecile 11. Lock it up 12. Just Being Me 13. Best Pum Pum 14. Been So Long 15. Dreaming of you 16. Thug Loving 17. Good Love Featuring Sizzla 18. Messed up 19. My Dreamz 20. Dedicated to Mama While singing the song Move Your body Lady Saw boasts "Beyonce ain't got nothing on me, Madonanna ain't got nothing on me, Britney Spears ain't got nothing on me, and Christina Aguilera can't shake it like me." Just Being me she says "Just want to be me, I don't need your negativity." The skit Cocky Liquor is quite funny. I actually enjoy all the songs on this album, but my favorite songs are the following: 2. I've got your man 3. Man is the least 4. Do Me Better (one of my workout jams) 5. Move Your body Featuring Voicemail (one of my workout jams) 6. Strip Tease (one of my workout jams) 7. Coming Over (one of my workout jams) 9. Pretty Pu$$sy 10. Loser Featuring Cecile 11. Lock it up (one of my workout jams) 13. Best Pum Pum She has plenty of songs that will make you get up and shake your hips, and whine to the beat. The song Dedicated to mama is so touching. She sings about her mother with pride, and you can feel how much she misses and appreciated her mother. My Dreamz is another good song. I feel this is a great album, one that will be in heavy rotation on my CD player at home and in my car. I hope she does not keep us waiting 6 more years before she releases another album. This sista is tight!!!

Its been 6 incredily long, healthy and beautiful years of living since Lady Saw dropped her last album, the underrated (and well censored) 99 Ways. While she's been 'away' artists who were somewhere in highschool in '98 have come to the forefront and not just dropped albums, but developed careers and names for themselves. Also, females in the business have emerged, re-emerged and stepped their game up to lay a challenge to Lady Saw's throne.
While she's spent more time on tour than in the studio the last 6 years, time has fortunately done nothing to diminish her skills, lyrically, personally or image-wise. Enter the aptly titled Strip Tease. While I'd hate to diminish songs such as Dedicated to Mama and My Dreamz, good tunes are they both, Lady Saw, like 6 years ago, like 6 years from now is at her best when she's being what she is. The slackest dancehall artist since the late great General Echo (what might a Saw/Echo combination have sounded like?). The best song here is the bluntly titled Pretty Pussy which brings the old Saw up to the date on a new age riddim absolutely tearing it up. Also love Loser which is a combination with younger (but established) artist Ce'cile; Another (odd) combination Good Love with Sizzla; the hilarious Lock It Up and best Pum Pum. Another tune I really like is Thug Loving which is, of course, slack, but it slows it down to a point and Saw absolutely breaks it and locks off the flow, I can imagine the producer in the studio saying "You just broke my riddim", she locks it on the tune. Overall, what I will say about this album is that I wasn't too impressed at the beginning, it takes a minute to grow on you, which can be expected after 6 years of hearing absolutely everyone else. But Strip Tease is what it is, it's an album by Lady Saw, that alone warrants a purchase, but Strip Tease is more than that. Its the latest album from a Legend whose still making her music at her highest level and still giving her fans what they want. Big album.

Pretty good music to enjoy. Im not a true die hard for reggae, but I did appreciate about half of the songs on this cd.

Lady Saw still manages to deliver despite being in the industry for over a decade especially at a time when artists' careers do not last more than three years. Strip Tease is an album that was six years in the making but definitely worth the wait. Time has done nothing to diminish her talent; this 18 track album (20 if you include an intro and a skit) definitely showcases Lady Saw's versatility and skills. Lady Saw, still explicit and raw, stays true to her reputation and holds nothing back on the tracks Pretty P***y and Best Pum Pum. Lady Saw then collaborates with Ce'cile on the high energy track entitled Loser. Lady Saw defends herself on Just Being Me, "I just wanna be me / I just wanna be free / to express my sexuality / I don't need your negativity / I'm here to rock the party / Don't tell me about decency / Not because you have a PHD / That doesn't mean you're better than me" The slow bounce of Good Love is an unforeseen collaboration with Sizzla. Lady Saw then slows things down and gets personal with the last song on the album, Dedicated To Mama, where Lady Saw expresses her love for her mother who passed away recently. The songs with the best crossover ability are I've Got Your Man, Do Me Better, Strip Tease, Loser, Dreaming of You, and My Dreamz. In conclusion this album can be played from beginning to end, the production is tight and lyrics tighter. Strip Tease definitely raises the bar for other artists', male or female.
