There's so much music in the indie world that it can become overwhelming trying to keep up. This little outfit deserves some attention. The Donkeys have that Sterling Morrison - low-fi - Luna thing going that is a nice antidote to the hyperactive and very overproduced stuff we're hearing in the indie universe now. Nice to hear a band of guys playing songs with memorable little hooks that sneak up on you like a beer buzz on a hot summer afternoon. They've got the drone thing down and it's pretty trippy stuff with shimmering keyboards and sitars worked into the mix. "Ceiling Tan" should actually be on adult album alternative radio right now. "Kaleidoscope" has an awesome lo-fi groove but probably needed one more break to build some tension before the final coda, but maybe they were too mellow at that point to do it. Other standouts: "Don't Know Who We Are", "Oxblood", "Valerie" and "East Coast Raga." This is the kind of band that you invite back to a pool party after the show. The album art with the toad, the surf wagon and the planets is a good indication that these guys are probably really great chaise lounge philosophers.
