5.0 out of 5 stars Book written by a woman who has lived the Truths herself.
I read this book really quickly and will keep this book handy. This book is not just another relationship book, but it's a book written for women by a woman who has lived it herself. So her Truths are truths she can really endorse because she lived them. The Truths are tried, and tested.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just ok
I don't know why but I had high expectations for this book. I read this book in a few hours which is something I rarely do. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. If you normally read self-help books for dating, then she's not really saying anything different. I will say that I liked reading it though, just didn't deliver what I thought was going to be...

This review is from: Stripped Bare: The 12 Truths That Will Help You Land the Very Best Black Man (Paperback)
I read this book really quickly and will keep this book handy. This book is not just another relationship book, but it's a book written for women by a woman who has lived it herself. So her Truths are truths she can really endorse because she lived them. The Truths are tried, and tested.

I thought reading this book was timely for me, being that I'm out there trying to navigate the dating jungle. The book is often humorous at times, but very insightful. La Dawn Black has the book set up where the beginning of the chapter has a letter from someone, then she goes into the topic at hand. She reveals what the Truth is, and then shows an example of the Truth. The chapter ends with a Truthful lesson and then a Bare Necessity. La Dawn shares her own relationship realities that helped her form her Truths.

Some of the topics discussed are:
1. Letting go of the past
2. Friends messing up our relationship
3. Making our relationship a top priority
4. Getting the clues
5. Dating outside the box

This book is chockful of information. One chapter that especially needs to be read by some women out there is "Stop Chasing Unavailable Men". I would highly recommend this book, and I suggest fellow women buy this book as gifts for their sister friends, or female relatives in search of a good relationship. It really offers some wonderful insight. I'm not saying this book will help you find that man of your reality tomorrow. But it will open your eyes to the choices and some of the things getting in the way of you having a good relationship.

For instance you know how women love to say "if he is not making a certain amount of money, she won't waste her time." Well why is it some women choose men based on salary, but they don't do the same for their friends? Think about it. When was the last time you chose a best friend based on their bank account? You know how some of us have that friend that is financially challenged.

When I read this paragraph, I knew I would really enjoy this book. Our challenge is not with our men. The real challenge is reprogramming ourselves so that we can be contributors to our relationships, not detractors.

Here is one more excerpt I will share:

The very best black man is one who is able to feed your spirit and body through compassion, understanding, and dedication to goals, honesty, wit and respect. The very best brother for you will be the one who is able to meet all your needs - not just the superficial ones.

This book will give hope to women who think they are going to be single for the rest of their lives. There are good men out there; we just need to be open to the possibilities. I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Transcending Relationship Guide, August 9, 2006
This review is from: Stripped Bare: The 12 Truths That Will Help You Land the Very Best Black Man (Paperback)
Stripped Bare by LeDawn Black

In Stripped Bare LeDawn Black delivers an insightful relationship guide for sisters filled with advice, humor and wit. As a radio host of her own urban relationship show in Baltimore, Ms. Black lays the foundation for garnering the ultimate relationship for African American sisters everywhere. In Stripped Bare, we are given the 12 steps or truths to follow in order to successfully pursue, blissfully cohabitate and build cohesive relationships with our men.

Black advises women to strip (hence the title) all negative
preconceptions that have been either handed down through the ages, via sistah-friends or just by way of experiencing bad relationships, to freely embrace the positivity of finding our ultimate soul mate.

My intake of this insightful self-help book, that read like a
novel, is that in order to have a successful healthy
relationship, one must clearly embrace the truth that we are the most important part of any relationship. We must love ourselves first and foremost before we can extend or embrace the love of another. There should be no preconceived notions that past relationships, whether failed or successful, dictate present day relationships. All that lies in the past must stay in the past. Ms. Black has also interwoven her own personal experiences along with those of others that she has interviewed. Although this is a tell-all from a sisters point of view, women of all nationalities will find this applicable in their quest to find the very best man for them.

My favorite truths are Friendships Truly Matters and Be the Prize. Holding true to the old adage best friends make the best lovers, LeDawn explores this with succinct clarity. Although she indicates in Be The Prize that we should be the very best for our men in at all times/situations, I believe that we should be the very best for ourselves first and all else will fall into place.

It reads like a novel with anecdotal tidbits sprinkled with witty humor. This is definitely a must read not only for sisters, but, for all women who are looking for love or trying to put a little spark back into a long standing relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Break the cycle, May 12, 2006

This review is from: Stripped Bare: The 12 Truths That Will Help You Land the Very Best Black Man (Paperback)
Before undertaking the arduous task of writing a relationship book for the African American community, Ms. Black researched for twelve basic truths that would improve the quality of love in our lives.

She urges women to strip away the negative perception of Black love and let go of the unfavorable falsehoods. To call the news media, television shows, and women's magazines liars, because there are good black men out there who are looking for good black sisters. She challenges women to reprogram themselves and realize that, as she states, "the most important person in a relationship is you". That there are no tricks or steps to be followed, no special place to meet men, no magical weave or makeup that can guarantee a fulfilling relationship. That we must live in the present and let past experiences, positive and negative, stay where they died. She offers basic, proven truths that will increase the ability to identify, pursue and build a relationship with the very best black man.

Her twelve truths are: Let Go of the Past; Gain a Sense of Fun; Make Your Relationship a Top Priority; Sex is Not a Four Letter Word; Get the Clues; Be the Prize; Break the Girlfriend Chain; Live for You; Friendship Truly Matters; Always Remember the First Time; Get Your Dating Mix On; Playing Keep away.

STRIPPED BARE shares practical relationship advice which will have women taking an inventory of their lives and of what they bring to the table in the search for the man of their dreams. Ms. Black shares intimate stories and personal antidotes that are amusing and candid. Her twelve truths have been put to the test by herself and several of her friends; they are highly endorsed; they almost come with a guarantee. This blueprint is a must read.

i am looking for a great guy period and while the title says black guy these tips are universal! it is all about inner peace and knowledge and being bold enough to go after what you want. the book is funny as hell and well worth a happy hour discussion with your girls. ladawn has been through it all and she gets it -- love should be fun, passionate, satisfying and at times funny.

I am not a big fan of Relationship help books. They tend to pacify the readers, and are very predictable. This book written by Ms.Black offers a different spin on relationships advice, it points out how we must possess the same qualities that we are requiring in a mate. It has precise points, and a mechanism for positive and eteneral change for women's attitudes and attributes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Advice For Real Women!, April 6, 2006
This review is from: Stripped Bare: The 12 Truths That Will Help You Land the Very Best Black Man (Paperback)
Do you think that all hope is gone in finding the very best Black man? Do you feel you need to settle for less? If so, then you definitely need to read this book! Stripped Bare is a "no nonsense" relationship guide to finding the right Black man for you. This is not your typical relationship book though. This author is happily married with a top-rated urban radio relationship show, two things that certainly make her a credible expert. The book is separated into twelve "truths" that include the author's own experiences as well as others. What I really liked about this book was the frankness of this author. It's like she takes you by the hand to lead you in the right direction to finding the best man for you. Stripped Bare is about how to land the very best Black man, but women of all races can use these truths to land the best man for them as well. Some of my favorite truths are "Ditch The Skirt" and "Make Your Relationship A Top Priority." Stripped Bare is an outstanding relationship book that is hopefully just the beginning of a long career for LaDawn Black.

Ms. Black writes in a forthright, down-to-earth manner. It is refreshing to read a book that gets to the point without "educational" pontification which makes one decipher what is being discussed.

Women, we have issues. Women, we can deal with them armed with the stuff of publications like this.

This review is from: Stripped Bare: The 12 Truths That Will Help You Land the Very Best Black Man (Paperback)
I love how simple and easy this book is to read and comprehend. I've bought several copies for a few of my girlfriends. LaDawn breaks down these truths to the simplest forms and debunks the myths that society and the media has gotten women to buy into. I deifinitely look forward to reading her others books.
