Book Description

January 14, 2002
As interior designer Debbie Hunt struggles to recover from a devastating stroke, she is determined to become independent again. Her delightful but interfering roommate, Molly, lines up her nephew Jake Dover to assist Debbie while she adjusts to independent living. The transition from incapacitated stroke survivor to independent woman is a journey of intense physical effort, frustration, business challenges, and emotional trauma. Jake not only assists Debbie with her physical needs but also helps her deal with the fears and challenges. When Debbie finds herself falling in love with him, she tries to forget her romantic dreams and concentrate all her energies on her recovery and her business. Debbie believes Jake deserves a woman without a flawed body, someone who won't be a burden to him. Jake, who has recently been discharged from the Army, has never been ambitious, and he believes Debbie is too smart and successful for him. Can what they thought was a tragedy really be a stroke of luck for both of them?

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Lillie Ammann always dreamed of writing fiction "someday." She put her dream on hold for over twenty years to run an interior landscape business. Her only writing was articles for business and trade journals. She especially enjoyed writing and publishing Lillie's Lovely Little Gardening Book, a guide to interior plant care.

After she suffered a stroke in 1992, Lillie realized she couldn't count on "someday" and decided to pursue her dream of writing fiction.

Lillie felt blessed to have a husband who did for her what she couldn't do for herself, while encouraging her to be as independent as possible. She asked herself, "How would someone without this kind of support cope with the recovery process?" Her imagined answer to this question became the novel Stroke of Luck, which was published by Awe-Struck E-Books in December 1999. She sold her business in 1996 to have more time to write.

Lillie's nonfiction book, Look Beyond Tomorrow: The Carola Spencer Story, tells the inspirational story of how Lillie's friend Carola Spencer triumphed over the tragedy of workplace violence. Lillie wrote the book, which was published in 1998 by the organization Friends of Carola, to raise money for Carole's medical expenses.

She is a member and immediate past president of San Antonio Writers Guild. She also belongs to World Romance Writers and the Electronically Published Internet Connection (EPIC).

When she isn't writing, Lillie is an independent business owner representing a national preventive health care company. She loves helping others improve their health and build their financial security through network marketing.

She is also active in her church, volunteering as an unpaid church secretary and newsletter editor. In 1998, she edited A Bouquet of Recipes from the Diocese of the Southwest, Anglican Church in America.

Lillie and Jack, her husband of thirty-three years, live in San Antonio, Texas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Tales review, September 14, 2002

By TT reviewer Marysa [full review on our website]

What would you do if one day, without any warning, you lost your autonomy? What would you do if, suddenly, you weren't able to walk, move, dress yourself, or even eat by yourself? What would you do if the easiest and simplest thing in your life became a monstrous task? Lose your mind? I know I would.

This is what happens to Debbie Hunt. One day, after a massive stroke, she finds herself in a rehabilitation center, unable to move, talk, or take care of herself. Short of thirty years old, owner of a successful interior design business, Debbie finds herself alone in the world to face the biggest challenge of her entire life; Being able to be herself again.

Fortunately, with the help of her rehabilitation roommate, Debbie meets Jake; a thirty-year-old man who just left the army. Jake is a man waiting to grow up. Restless and full of energy, he is looking forward to relaxing for a while after his 8 years in the military, but his aunt Molly has other ideas. After offering him to Debbie as her help when she goes home, Jake finds himself unable to say no to his favorite aunt.

Being together 24 hours per day, seven days a week, Jake and Debbie slowly realize that the friendship they started during his days visiting his aunt at the rehabilitation center was turning into something more. But as Debbie grows more and more attached to Jake, she vows to herself never to be a burden to anyone-- much less any man, including her friend, Jake. Even though she is clearly falling in love she denies it with all of her might.

Despite the sometimes too short descriptions, Stroke of Luck really makes you think about everything that we take for granted, and how hard it is for someone to rebuild what was lost. Even the tiniest thing we do every day, like brush our hair, seems like the biggest task to accomplish. If you want a deep romance where the heroine and hero face personal challenges, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Myshelf.Com Book Reviewer, July 4, 2001
This review is from: Stroke of Luck (Diskette)
Clear as crystal and smooth as silk, Lillie Ammann's STROKE of LUCK is powerfully written. Readers will quickly become absorbed into the gripping, emotionally charged tale of love, honor, and devotion.

Twenty-eight year old, Commercial Interior Designer, Debbie Hunt never anticipated a trip to the Chiropractor would result in finding herself paralyzed, and faced with life in a wheelchair. Coming to terms with her grave condition, she befriends her rehabilitation roommate Molly. With Molly's up beat personality, and daily visits from her handsome nephew Jake Dover, Debbie soon realizes there may be hope in having a normal life once again. When the opportunity for her to go home presents itself, Molly readily volunteers Jake to serve as her assistant. With such close contact with Jake, Debbie finds herself falling in love with Jake's kind and giving personality. Will she be able to put the pieces of her heart back together when Jake leaves in three months?

Recently discharged from the Army, Jake Dover spends his time between jobs visiting his favorite Aunt Molly. When his Aunt suggests, he should volunteer to help her roommate he is reluctant to agree. Through this temporary arrangement he is surprised to learn Debbie is not only beautiful, but shows remarkable independent traits. Her strength and determination give him the courage to hope to change this temporary arrangement into a more permanent relationship.

STROKE OF LUCK is an emotionally wrenching and dramatically intense story. Lillie Ammann tackles a very difficult subject with superb insight, and compassion. She masterfully weaves a very satisfying love story, which will stay with you long after the story ends.
