Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Drawing on personal experiences (both her parents were stroke victims) and material gathered through extensive interviewing of stroke patients, families, and health professionals, the author presents a multidimensional picture containing a plethora of solid information. She provides clear definitions of medical terms, including a lucid exposition of the nature of stroke, and also addresses physical, mental, and psychological changes, the hospital experience, the role of a rehabilitation center, home care and nursing home options, and support systems for the caregivers. With her personable writing style, Shimberg sounds like a good friend offering reassurance, guidance, and support. Most of the information here can be found scattered in various directories, but this book is a handy one-volume reference guide for families coping with the myriad problems created by the incapacity of a loved one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, simple language, encouraging!, May 13, 1999

I found this book after my mother suffered her first stroke. I only wish I had found it earlier, it would have saved me a lot of frustration. I didn't understand what my mom was going through or her thoughts. The book opened my eyes. Now that I'm a medical social worker I recommend it highly to everyone who is a family member or caregiver of a person who had suffered from a stroke. Thank you Elaine for your time, research. It's a great little book of knowledge, I'm ordering 10 copies to give to my clients. MSW, LSW

The odds are that stroke happens to just about every family sooner or later.

To help any family to deal with it, this is the book to have.

Learn who might be stroke-prone and what your role in the hospital should be.

Highly recommended. In fact, get it BEFORE you need it.
