Editorial Reviews

Review

“A riveting, fast-paced story that leaves the reader breathless.”—Sandra Brown, New York Times bestselling author

“Caitlin Strong is back, as tough, human and utterly fascinating as ever. Jon Land writes with heart, depth, and precision.”—Carla Neggers, New York Times bestselling author

“Filled with real, tough, characters and a plot that twists around like a Pecos rattler in a whiskey jug. Reading Caitlin Strong is the equivalent to adding a little fresh lime and a taste of salt to your tequila.”—W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear, authors of People of the Longhouse

About the Author

JON LAND is the acclaimed author of numerous bestsellers, including Strong Enough to Die, Strong Justice, and The Seven Sins. Land lives in Providence, Rhode Island.

More About the Author

Since his first book was published in 1983, Jon Land has written twenty-eight novels, seventeen of which have appeared on national bestseller lists. He began writing technothrillers before Tom Clancy put them in vogue, and his strong prose, easy characterization, and commitment to technical accuracy have made him a pillar of the genre.

Land spent his college years at Brown University, where he convinced the faculty to let him attempt writing a thriller as his senior honors thesis. Four years later, his first novel, The Doomsday Spiral, appeared in print. In the last years of the Cold War, he found a place writing chilling portrayals of threats to the United States, and of the men and women who operated undercover and outside the law to maintain U.S. security. His most successful of those novels were the nine starring Blaine McCracken, a rogue CIA agent and former Green Beret with the skills of James Bond but none of the Englishman's tact.

In 1998 Land published the first novel in his Ben and Danielle series, comprised of fast-paced thrillers whose heroes, a Detroit cop and an Israeli detective, work together to protect the Holy Land, falling in love in the process. He has written seven of these so far. The most recent, The Last Prophecy, was released in 2004.

Recently, RT Book Reviews gave Jon a special prize for pioneering genre fiction, and his short story "Killing Time" was shortlisted for the 2010 Dagger Award for best short fiction and included in 2010's The Best American Mystery Stories. Land is currently writing Blood Strong, his fourth novel to feature Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong--a female hero in a genre which, Land has said, has too few of them. The second book in the series, Strong Justice (2010), was named a Top Thriller of the Year by Library Journal and runner-up for Best Novel of the Year by the New England Book Festival. The third, Strong at the Break, will be released this year, and the fourth, Blood Strong, will follow in 2012. His first nonfiction book, Betrayal, written with Robert Fitzpatrick, tells the behind-the-scenes story of a deputy FBI chief attempting to bring down Boston crime lord Whitey Bulger, and will also be released in 2011.

Land currently lives in Providence, not far from his alma mater.

Steve Moore
Action-packed, strong and versatile characters, a strong plot and sensible, yet exciting writing, Strong at the Break is a great thriller!
Wendy L. Hines
Painful, if slightly amusing, to read due to misuse of multi-syllable words pulled from a thesaurus with no idea of their proper use.

Strong At The Break by author Jon Land is in a word 'Intense'. Caitlin Strong is a kick-ass 4th generation Texas Ranger who takes on the Hells Angels in upstate New York, drug dealers in Mexico and a right-wing militia group in Texas. The author has a few stories happening and he ties them together in the end for an amazing finish. The book is a masterpiece of action, gunfighting and heart-stopping suspense. A well-written book! I haven't written a full page review as there are several already done and they recap the story remarkably. Highly recommended. 5 Stars. ~ RJ Parker, author of 7 serial killer books

A few years back, I was a big fan of Jon Land's books. He could do no wrong. Then, the excitement just seemed to fizzle out of his books as he seemed to lose direction (at least for me) and I found myself looking elsewhere. I was never a big fan of his Blaine McCracken books. Fast forward a few years. Then I read crime writer Sam Millar's very informative and favorable review of Strong Justice (a Caitlin Strong novel) on New York Journal of Books, where he compared Land's descriptive prowess to that of Cormac McCarthy's No County for Old Men. High praise indeed. I took a chance and went out and bought the first in the series before commencing on Strong Justice. Wow! I love Caitlin. For my money, she is the best creation Land has ever produced in his prolific writing career. These books are going to be perfect for the movies, which no doubt they will be made into in the coming years. Dear Mister Land, please keep this fast-paced and beautifully rendered series going. Forget the rest of your commitments, if need be, to keep the high standard you have set for these damn great books. Welcome back, Jon Land!

Once again the hero of this novel is fifth generation Texas Ranger
Caitlin Strong. When she was a child her daddy Ranger Jim Strong had
led a raid on a church with militia type traits called the Church of the Redeemer. This church was headquartered in Midland, Texas. The
churgh was led by Reverand Maxwell Arno. The raid failed to get Maxwell Arno. He was located at a Bait and Tackle in Midland, Texas.
Ranger Strong winds up killing Reverand Arno and two of his bodyguards. Into the future Arno's son Malcolm has established a new
church called the Patriot Sun. Caitlin Strong and her sidekick Cort
Wesley Masters go to Quebec to stop drug smuggling on the Canadian border. It is also an operation to smuggle weapons to the Patriot Sun. This operation is run by the LaChance brothers a group of Hell's Angels. Upon returning to San Antonio Caitlin is contacted by Mark John Serles. He claims that the army hastried to kill him. He
lost his legs in a roadside bombing. After making contact an attempt
ismade to kill Caitlin Strong with a roadside bomb. She discovers that 4 billion dollars was stolen from Iraq money and funneled to a militia group(Patriot Sun). Cort Wesley and Caitlin discover a child
kidnapping ring that is linked to Patriot Sun. Cort Wesley's son has been kidnapped by the ring. Bescuse Arno is politically powerful Strong and Cort Wesley stand alone. In walks Colonel Guillermo Paz to save the day. This book has an explosive ending. This is another
quality in the Caitlin Strong series.

This story is about a young woman named Caitlin, who followed in the footsteps of her Father and Grandfather, who were Texas Rangers.
I enjoyed the action and adventure of this Texas Ranger novel. I confess that I didn't understand all the wasted pages where the author wrote words from top to bottom. However, if you like Texas Rangers, you will enjoy this one.

I am a huge Jon Land fan and own almost all of his books. Land's constant use of the phrase "Ranger" to describe the heroine in this novel becomes annoying after a while. Caitlin Strong has a name and it should be used by other characters in the book..You know where this tale is headed after reading the first few pages; still, I found it to be entertaining and a pleasurable read.

The Texas Ranger Strong fights crime along two borders in this ongoing series. Looking forward to the next installment. How does Iraq, Hells Angels, and homegrown militia all come together to give Caitlan and Wes heartburn.

When I 'eventually' started the first book, I had no interest in this style of story..Texas Rangers/Female heroine,, I only bit the bit the bullet and gave the Caitlin Strong series a fair go because I've been a fan of Jon's work since almost day 1.
I'm now a convert (to the Caitlin Strong series at least!)
I've read all 5 now and have loved every one of them. The main characters work well together, and the secondary characters compliment them beautifully..
Looking forward to more if Jon's decides to add to this series

Strong at the Break is the third Caitlin Strong novel in the series. However, this is the first book from this author I have read. I really didn't think I was missing too much though and it read fine as a stand alone book.

The story opens with some backstory of a young Caitlin and her father, a Texas Ranger, supposedly about to go fishing but instead staking out a place. Maxwell Arno has been doing some pretty bad things in the church, and Caitlin's father Jim is there to arrest him. The problem arises though when Maxwell doesn't want to be arrested and a shoot-out transpires with Max dying in his son Malcolm's arms.

Years later, Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong finds herself in several operations that lead her from Canada, to Mexico and as far as Iraq. But the person holding the helm is Malcolm Arno, who took his father's evil place and made it ten times worse. There's a showdown about to go on and it's between Caitlin and Malcolm.

Political unrest, drug trafficking, child slavery and more are key notes in this page-turning thriller! Caitlin is a fierce heroine with her grandpa's Colt and her dogged determination. Action-packed, strong and versatile characters, a strong plot and sensible, yet exciting writing, Strong at the Break is a great thriller!
