4.0 out of 5 stars sooo much better, April 1, 2010
This review is from: Strong, Sleek and Sinful (Mass Market Paperback)
Lori O'Clare nails it with Strong, Sleek and Sinful. FBI agent Kylie Donovan is undercover to catch an online child predator. Because of her youthful appearance, she is able to pretend to be a college student doing a thesis on teen behavior. Perry Flynn is a police detective that knows there is a connection between the teens popping up missing or murdered in his town but for some reason his chief is blocking him from fully investigating this.

Perry is a dedicated hero and he will do anything to prevent his nieces from ending up a victim. In the age of twitter, blogs and other social websites,he knows his four nieces are vulnerable to the sexual predators who use the internet to lure out young females. He is immediately suspicious of Kylie a college student from Kansas who has befriended Dani, his most rebellious niece.

The story was really interesting as Kylie tries to keep her identity a secret from Perry since the killer could very well be an officer on the force. Perry and Kylie's relationship didnt have any of the funky weirdness from her previous two FBI novels and for that I was grateful. The portrayal of Perry's nieces was very realistic even while their behavior was occasionally foolish. The teen fights, name callling and pout sessions brought back many a childish memory of my own. The plot was strong enough that I was sucked in and thoroughly enjoyed this.

spoilers for a few cons******

Ok there were a few tiny things that bugged me. Perry's chief behaved in a manner that was guaranteed to put his men on alert while he tried not to let them know that the FBI suspected a police as being the killer. He was so over the top visiting them late at night and checking there computers which could have put the FBI's case in jeopardy. Didnt seem like realistic behavior for a veteran officer on the force. Kylie insisted longer than necessary in her head that Perry could turn up as the killer when it was clear from their first meeting that his nieces were important to him and that he was going to put away the killer when he found him. Lastly when they noticed the black surbaban with fake tags and followed it to the potential killers house they basically did nothing. Kinda ran around like chickens instead of Kylie contacting her people to plan a way to catch the killer. Instead this is explained away by saying they cant check a police officers house without being extra careful but they never got a warrant or checked the house and computers officially which I think could have been done since the tags matched car that had been after Kylie . They snuck around themselves instead which was a waste. Oh well, still much better put together and a much more solid read.

The characters are great. The tension between them exciting.
But the plot holes. You could drive a 747 thru them. Everyone decides early that a local cop is involved in the disappearances. The heroine is stalked by someone in a Sururban. How hard is it to get a list of all local cops owning a Surburban. How hard is it for real FBI cyber expert to eliminate some of the cops in the local group. After all, this is a local precinct, not the entire Chicago police department. Then there are the teens. Teenage girls are not this stupid. Savvy teens with a cop for an uncle, finding out that girls are being lured to meeting from someone they met on the internet, deliberately agreeing to meet someone from the internet. No way. If they were playing Nancy Drew Maybe, but Nancy always came with a pack of helpers.

Spoilers
Also how did the killers hook up? Never explained. (or else that was in the parts I skipped.)
And the end. Problem solved, and the heroine goes off to Central America for 2 months without resolving her issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars exciting police procedural, April 1, 2010
This review is from: Strong, Sleek and Sinful (Mass Market Paperback)
In Mission Hills, two female high school students have disappeared in the last year. One remains missing; the other is dead. Police Lieutenant Perry Flynn strongly believes a sexual serial killer using the Internet is on the loose stalking teenage girls; having four cherished teen nieces who he is helping raise he vows to end the predator's reign of terror.

FBI agent Kylie Donovan goes undercover as a college student investigating the same case. Kylie and Perry meet with each attracted to one another but each suspicious of the other. Kylie fears the psychopath is a cop while he wonders if there is a sinister deadly reason she befriends his nieces. As Kylie concludes someone is setting up Perry for the fall, she vows to keep him and his family safe.

This is an exciting police procedural that focuses on some of the modern day dangers with Internet enticements and stalking. Fast-paced from the moment Perry confronts his boss with evidence that the perp lives in Mission Hills, readers will enjoy the tango between the two law enforcement officials although he can be brutally nasty protecting his family from the woman he loves.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story concept..., October 31, 2010

The concept of the story sucked me in. I really wanted to like it. I will admit to being an eternal optimist when it comes to books. Surely, I don't dislike this author as much as I think I do. Surely, I will not resent spending hours of my life reading something I will not like. Yeah, I'm the freaking Don Quixote of romance novels.

I liked Perry, even though I thought he was a bit overstepping with his sister's kids. (The sister was the widow of a police officer, with 3 daughters) I really liked Kylie. She overcame her issues and makes a difference in the world. Tough girl, and I mean that in the best possible way. But Perry and Kylie together did not work for me. At all. Which brings me to the biggest problem I have with Ms. O'Clare's work. To quote the song, There's no sex in violence. Except in the "L" book and in this one, apparently. I hated Tall, Dark and Deadly so much I have blocked it from my mind, and thus, can't remember if violence=big turn on in that one. I get that some people like it rough. Okay, no problem. But physical fights between the hero and heroine, or him shoving her up against a wall in anger...that crosses a line for me. Especially because it seemed so out of character for the hero to act this way.

Then there are the plot holes. Most of them have been covered in previous reviews, so I will not rehash. Between the jarring out of character moments and the multiple too stupid to be believable scenarios, I think it has finally been imprinted in my brain that this author does not work for me. YMMV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Into the Minds of Today's Teenage Girls, May 29, 2010

This review is from: Strong, Sleek and Sinful (Mass Market Paperback)
I liked the story line very much...an action romance using today's technological and cultural issues for teenagers and the adults who love and protect them. I enjoyed the strength of the heroine, Kylie, and sort of the dominance of Perry. The plot twist of the raper(s) was totally unexpected which was a great surprise. However, I agree with another reviewer that not providing an explanation of how they came together to form their diabolic acts left a hole. I also found the transition of capturing the bad guys to wrapping up the relationship issues between Kylie and Perry slightly jarring...she goes out of country for 2 months and things are unresolved??? She's injured; he's injured; they make up in the last few pages of the book? Makes it seem it's all Kylie's fault. I'm in Kylie's corner just because I like how her character was created. This book makes me want to go back and read the other books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, Sleek and Sinful, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Strong, Sleek and Sinful (Mass Market Paperback)

Special Agent Kylie Donovan is trying to capture an online predator who is killing local teenage girls. Lieutenant Perry Flynn is following the same case, off the clock. He's trying to protect his teenage nieces from the same killer. When all signs point to a cop, though, Kylie wonders if Perry could be the killer. Why else is he so involved? The more dangerous the case gets, the more Perry gets involved. He's determined to catch this killer before he hurts someone he loves.

Kylie gets the job done using her tough as nails attitude, her brains, and her body. Her looks make her blend in with the local teenagers, but she stands out to Perry. Their attraction is strong and their sexual chemistry intense. It's too bad she has to lie to him for most of the book. Strong, Sleek and Sinful is an action-packed, suspenseful story with a heated and tumultuous romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but..., May 11, 2011
This review is from: Strong, Sleek and Sinful (Mass Market Paperback)
SPOILERS!!!!

Ok, I thought this book was an interesting read. Kylie is a Special Agent for the FBI undercover as bait for an online predator. All the cops in a certain local unit are suspects, including Lieutenant Perry Flynn. Kylie and Perry meet and, boom, instant attraction. I found the story line very interesting, but it could have been written a lot better.

A lot of things in this book were very unbelievable. First, no matter how serious the situation even when Dani was nearly kidnapped and made a victim, in the back of Kylie and Perry's mind was how attracted they were to the other. They're chasing after the "Peter" in the parking lot and all Kylie can think about is how attractive Perry is and all Perry can think about is that they had sex earlier that night and he can smell it on her. The way they handled situations were highly unrealistic. The FBI and local police are working round the clock to catch this guy and they have a surviving victim who can ID him and don't even use her! They pretty much ID the guy and know what car he drives and where he lives and they don't do anything about it. They don't report it because they don't want their superiors to know they were together. Don't you think catching a pedophilic online predator is way more important than the amazing sex you're having?

Also, while Perry sounds like an attractive man, his way-too dominating nature was annoying. I can understand men being dominant, in fact, I enjoy dominance in men, but his "men can handle all situations and woman are too delicate to handle stressful situations" demeanor annoyed me to no end. He was the one who decided whether they should continue to see each other or not, he snuck into her house wearing body armor for God's sake! He also gets pissed about everything! There wasn't one scene in the entire book where Perry didn't end up pissed off. It was really weird. The reaction his family had to Kylie was very strange too. They really liked Kylie and kept teasing Perry about them being together, but when it came down to it, they all criticized his relationship with her. Dani loves Kylie but every time there was evidence of her and Perry being together, she got all possessive and pissed, even Megan who wanted to set them up warned him against her.

To end, the story line was an excellent idea but it wasn't executed very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Yet~~~Keep them Coming~~, April 5, 2010

This book was everything I have come to expect from this author. I read the first two books in this series (Tall, Dark and Deadly (St. Martins) & Long, Lean and Lethal) last September and I couldn't wait for this to arrive. You do not have to read the other 2 to follow the story, but the characters from Long, Lean, and Lethal are briefly mentioned. So unless you want a spoiler - I recommend you start at the beginning.

This series has typical law enforcement characters and plots. However, this author's unique style makes everything seem fresh. Lieutenant Perry Flynn's character is awesomely written, he is an alpha male but, he is often written to show the love he shares for the people that are important to him. Kylie Donovan is also a well developed character. She is not your typical female lead - she is strong, independent and she doesn't let anyone including Perry push her around.

I haven't heard whether there are going to be more books in this series but I sure hope there will be.
