Class 4B at Pudding Bag School is disappointed when their beloved teacher, Miss Gilhoolie, falls ill before the summer fair. The class needs her because they're competing against Class 4A in the fair games. As coach, Miss Gilhoolie has taught them to recognize the presence of magic without interfering with it. But who can resist interfering with magic? Narrator Andy Crane is endearing as main character Dougal McDougal, as well as the kids, teachers, parents, and whiny tots. Crane expertly differentiates adult and kid humor, the tones of children's voices while competing, and normal feelings of rivalry. An excellent lesson in what it means to win closes this charming story. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine--
