Book Description

February 12, 1976
In search of prestige as well as profits, a rapacious American conglomerate sends one of its rising stars, a 34 year old corporate raider, to Bordeaux to find, buy and run a "suitable" chateau.  It doesn't matter which one, as long as it's famous, and it doesn't matter who he drives out or hurts. But he comes up against traditions he doesn't understand, is thwarted by the weather, by a major wine fraud, and by the chateau owner's strong willed daughter.

A captivating, thoroughly enjoyable novel...Daley has captured the atmosphere of tradition and cob-webbed wine cellars and mixed it with the specter of fraud.

From the Author

The best thing when writing about wine is that you get invited into the houses, and some of the Bordeaux chateaus are quite magnificent. Margaux with its alley of trees. Lafite with its elegant museum. LaGaffeliere with its old, old paintings. Yquem with its turrets. One year we lived for a week in the Chateau Haut Brion. These people are professional hosts, the dinners are sumptuous, and the wines sometimes extremely rare. At Chateau Angludet Peter Sichel once served us an 1876 Lafite. It is very hard, if you spend time in Bordeaux, not to fall in love with the city, with the vineyards, and with the wine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Red Wine a Blood, March 9, 2011
By
Jack Trout (Old Greenwich, CT USA) - See all my reviews
This book, set principally in Bordeaux, starts with a rapacious New York conglomerate exiling a too pushy young executive to France to find and buy a prestigious wine chateau. The executive, his career derailed, wants only to get back to New York, but he falls in love both with a chateau owner's strong willed daughter, and with the somber beauty of the wine country itself. All this is combined with enormous and fascinating lore about how the great wines are made, even as a tenacious Fraud Brigade detective tries to prove that an isolated chateau is turning out fraudulent wines. It is full of tension. Will the fraud be exposed? Will the grapes be brought in before storms ruin the harvest? What will happen to the young executive? Previously I had no great interest in wines apart from drinking them, but this novel made a convert of me. It is a great read.
