Maupassant's greatest novel,
By Caravaggio (Vanves (92), Fra.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Strong as Death (Paperback)
I read this book in French and consequently, I can't specify the translation is ok. But I can tell you Strong as Death is Maupassant's least known but greatest novel. The story of a painter from a lower class background, who can succeed in life because of his talent. He's lover to a countess, but she grews older and fears the painter fall in love with her daughter. Very profoundly described : the fear of growing old. When I see TV commercials for youth creams I can't help thinking it's still very topical. And feeling as a whole are very precisely described. Maupassant is THE best French writer. |
