Product Description

StrongArm gas charged lift supports are custom engineered and manufactured beyond industry standards to provide smooth operation and durability. The hardened chromium plated steel shaft is precision ground and polished for superior corrosion resistance and leak free sealing. The self cleaning piston assembly automatically opens during each compression cycle to keep the orifice clear of fluid contaminants and provide smoother operation and reliable performance. Most units also utilize StrongArm's patented temperature compensation module valve which ensures consistent operation even in extreme weather conditions. It does so by compensating for normal gas pressure changes caused by temperature variations. The metallic upper bushing is manufactured with bearing quality precision to provide exact fit with pistion rod and promote a long operating life.

Works perfectly since they've been installed.

Put these strong arms on and now he can release the lever and the hatch pops open.

These hatch lift supports are a perfect-fit replacement of the stock units. They have a plenty strong enough action to "pop" the hatch when unlocked and to lift it easily. We'll see how well they last, but as delivered they are great! The ball joints weren't perfectly round/mated so rotated stiffly at points, but I don't think that's a problem...1 star off for this manufacturing tolerance issue...no other problems. Replacement instructions are printed right on the box.

I must emphasize others' remarks that one needs to be exceedingly careful when removing the old struts. The nuts into which the struts' "bolts" turn are very superficially tack welded to the internal body cavities; if you break the tack welds, your job becomes exponentially more difficult. I strongly recommend using a penetrating oil like PB Blaster on the existing strut mounts (trying to get it between the bolt flange and the body) and allowing that to soak at least 30 minutes -- no amount of waiting is worse than what you'll have to do if you break out one of those nuts.

After soaking, prop the hatch firmly in a completely open position (with the aim of taking all load off the struts during removal). Carefully loosen the TOP mount (on the hatch end of the strut). These nuts should turn without any major wrenching; if you find yourself putting 20+ lb-ft of torque on the wrench to break free the bolts, STOP!!!, relube, and wait. Try heat if you have to, "but do NOT *wrench* on those bolts. Now break free the bottom mount bolt (on the body end of the strut). Have a helper ensure the hatch does not put any load on the struts while you finish removing the top mount. Now remove the lower.

Installation is the reverse. Take great care NOT to place any load from the hatch on the struts until they are fully tightened; loading them while partially tightened will almost surely break the captured nuts off their tack welds.

I purchased a pair of these for my wife's 2000 Eclipse GT as the rear hatch wasn't popping up when the lever was engaged, as well as it was sometimes not holding at the fully lifted position. When she told me it clunked her in the head when she was getting something out of the trunk I knew I had to replace the stock units. The new Strongarm's were very easy to replace, although you do need a Torx T40 screwdriver for the bolts on her car and someone to hold the hatch up ( I used a board of the correct length as I was by myself, but don't try this unless you assume any and all responsibility :) ), just unscrew the old and install the new. The new arms came with bolts already on the arms. You do have to lift up a little on the hatch to allign the second bolt but after installing this product, the hatch pops up when the lever is pulled or the key is turned and it lifts up and stays there as it should. Would highly recommend this product, the price was also very reasonable. I searched a couple other places and couldn't find these for less money, I believe the shipping was also free since the order was over $25. Very pleased overall.

Definitely much better than my previous oem struts which became pretty much useless. I don't think it's as good as some people review it to be, though. When it gets cold it needs a good amount of support to get it up. It almost feels like it's frozen in the compressed position. But after you open it once, it practically opens up by itself the next time (atleast within a few hours).
I'm sure it won't have that problem in warmer weather, though, and it's worth buying if your hatch doesn't stay open by itself anymore. No more getting hatched on the head!! =p

The positive reviews regarding this product were right on target. Replaced the worn out lifters relatively easily and these replacements are excellent! Couldn't be happier.

Just finished installing these in my wife's Eclipse. Now the hatch pops up using the inside level or the key out back, and stays up when you lift it. Followed the suggestion of others and lubricated the bolts before removing the old shocks. The old ones came out no problem. A bit difficult to line up the second bolt so as not to cross-thread when installing the new ones. You have to push up really hard on the hatch to align them. You will need a Torx T-40. Directions say to have another person hold up the hatch while installing; I used a crutch from the hospital and it worked just fine. Just make sure you don't knock it out while you have your head in there!
The local Mitsubishi dealer wanted $53 each for these shocks; only $20 each here on Amazon. And the dealer did not have them in stock and said they would arrive a day later than my Amazon order did. I'm very happy with my purchase. Should have done it along time ago. Now I don't have to worry about my wife getting her head knocked off unloading groceries from her trunk!

Works great. I'm building my triceps to close my trunk now. My hatch shoots open once I installed 2 of these bad boyz.

Beware of you car if you want this install to go smoothly!
1. You will need a special external torque driver bit for the Eclipse. I pick on up at Napa auto parts but other automotive supply store should have it for about ~$7.
2. The nuts holding these screws are cheaply welding inside the frame, so be delicate when taking these apart. If the do break off the frame you will have to get it re-welded. This did not happen to me but I read about 15 stores on the 3g forums.

All in all great supports just be prepared for the install to avoid heart break.

Left and right use the exact same support, buy 2, this product is sold individually.

Totally worth it on those cold days.
