Product great ... Instructions, lousy, January 30, 2012
This review is from: StrongArm 4564 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tailgate 2001-04 (Misc.)
I ordered these for my 2002 PT cruiser. My tailgate would not stay open. I went to the auto parts store to purchase these but they said they were out of stock and they didn't know when the manufacturer would get any more. If they did have them, they would be about $50 each. I purchased these on amazon for half the price, installed them, and now my tailgate will stay open and even lifts itself up without me having to tug at it.
Herein lies the problem(s) with these (hence four stars instead of five):
1. The product description says: "No special installation tools required". Well, I beg to differ. There is a special, Torx, screw head (star shaped) that you need to get the old lifts off and to install the new ones. Luckily we had one of just the right size in a tool kit I had purchased for our computers. So, there is a "special tool" right there. I doubt most people have these in their homes.
2. The instructions suck! They are in very small print on the side of a cardboard box and have minuscule pictures that you are supposed to compare to your old lifts to see how to install them. OK, so I had to get my glasses... I can live with that. Problem is, NONE of the pictures matched what we had. Luckily my lift's connection to the car was intuitively obvious to the most casual observer, and all we had to do was unscrew the old lifts and screw in the new ones. Oh, did I say "all we had to do?" The screws didn't seem to go in all the way and we had to play with the tailgate in different positions to get them to go in all the way. Even then, it was really difficult and I was worried we were doing damage to the car. In the end, we just powered through it, but it would have been nice to have some instructions or description of what we would encounter.
It all worked well, and my new lifts are in and the tailgate works like a dream. I also like that these are made in the USA.
p.s. this is one lift only, you will need to purchase 2 as you must replace both lifts at the same time.

Helps to have a helper install the strut, January 10, 2012
This review is from: StrongArm 4564 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tailgate 2001-04 (Misc.)
The struts fit and works perfectly. However, during installation, it helps to have someone hold the rear trunk door up while you screw the bolts in. Otherise, the bolts do not quite line up and you may either strip the bolts or not attain a proper fit. But the product itself replaces the original struts/lifts and no more bumped heads.

It took me less than 15 minutes to change both sides, October 16, 2011
This review is from: StrongArm 4564 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tailgate 2001-04 (Misc.)
I just completed the R&R of both struts on my sister's 2002 PT Cruiser. After breaking the old bolts loose with a ratchet, I used a #40 Torx bit hooked up to my cordless drill to speed up the operation. Including the consumption of one 12 ounce beer, it took about 10 minutes start to finish. Your mileage may vary.
The new struts fit perfectly. Just be careful not to cross thread when installing the new bolts. This is where your helper can assist by very slightly raising or lowering the tailgate so you can get the correct angle on your fastener.
Note: A co-worker recently paid nearly $250 at the dealer's for the same repair on her 2005 PT Cruiser.
