This is a fairly simple task. It took me about 30 minutes start to finish, but I had all the tools in easy access and am pretty handy. It took longer to write this review than to replace the 2 struts.

You may read that for some applications there are a left and right strut. If you look at struts on your tailgate, you will see a left sticker (blue) and a right sticker (red) on the 2 struts.

The 4699 has a blue sticker and fits (lines up to) the left side perfectly.

It will also fit the right side, but you have to do 1 thing so it will fit (line up): rotate the cylinder 1/4 turn counter clockwise. I did this by putting the rod end (JUST the clevis part) in a vice (gently very tighten) and turning the cylinder with my hand 1/4 turn ccw. The mechanism is not very tight, but it was tight enough so I couldn't hold the shiny rod end. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE VICE ON THE SHINY ROD; if you do you will have ruined the assembly. You could also hold the rod end clevis with a pair of pliers too I suppose.

After you rotate the rod assembly it will align perfectly to the right side door fasteners.

You will need a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and a T-40 TORX BIT SOCKET. The T-40 tool is needed to remove the 2 fasteners in each strut.

Prop the liftgate fully up with a 2 x 4 or get someone to hold it FULLY up. The liftgate must be fully extended, with a little force to remove and replace these struts. If you remove a strut without propping the liftgate it will fall on you and the strut will probably be flung sideways with some velocity.

Remove the bottom fastener first, then the top one.

Install each strut with the cylinder end up and the rod end down (as was the originals). Tighten the top fastener first, then the bottom one. Use a little finesse and common sense so you don't cross thread the bottom fastener; as the assembly is slightly longer that the attachment fastener spacing.

I got 2 of these to replace the lift supports on the back hatch for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It definitely helps to have a 2nd person to help hold open the hatch (even though we used a ladder to put under it to hold it up). I screwed in the top screw partially and then was able to use my hands to rotate the bottom part to the proper angle to use this item for either the left side or the right side. Actually both sides needed adjusting a little bit for me to use them, even though they had a blue sticker and were closer to be aligned for the left side as they came "out of the box". It was also a little tricky getting the 2nd screw started...had to get the hatch open just the right amount to have it lined up perfectly....that's where the 2nd person helps also.

But once installed, it works great (and I'm no mechanic) !!

This fits both the right and left side. For me I had to adjust it for the left side. I was able to adjust it by hand. If you have someone to help you hold the liftgate then it is pretty easier to do yourself. Just use a ratchet with a T40 attachment and save yourself at least $100 from what a dealer would charge. It took about 20 minutes to do.

I just bought a complete set of strongarm lift supports for the liftgate, rear glass, and hood for my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It works perfectly. They were very easy to install. I read the reviews and made sure I had a buddy help me hold things up, but it was so easy I think I probably could have done it by myself with a prop (although I wouldn't recommend it... safety first!).

The liftgate is the most difficult of the three to install, but the only difficulty is making sure you have the right torque bit (T-40?) for your ratchet (I borrowed it from a neighbor). Once you have that, it's as easy as removing two bolts and bolting the new lift supports in. I was worried about the supports being under pressure so I cautiously approached putting them in, but it turned out to be absolutely no worry at all. When the liftgate is open, the supports are in it's rest position so you don't need to pull or push on the supports at all. About the only thing you need to do is rotate the support arm 1/4 turn so you can bolt it in right. Also make sure you bolt the support in exactly the same way as the original (canister side up).

The other supports are easier to put in. The rear glass has only one bolt per support. I used a T24 bit which was a little small, but it was all I had and it worked good enough. I did this set on my own with a stick to prop to glass. The hood supports were even easier. No bolts required! You'll need a friend to hold up the hood, but just pop out the thin metal housing, wiggle off the supports and reverse the process for the new supports (took maybe 3 minutes to do both).

I am so thrilled to have these new supports in. I've been living with sagging supports for a few years now and had always meant to replace them, but thought it'd be a hassle or excessively expensive. With Amazon's great price ($5 discount for each pair) and free shipping (prime) I wonder why I didn't do it sooner.

I replaced 3 pairs of my original struts (hood, rear hatch, rear window) and I'm really happy I did. I did the installation by myself and the hardest thing about it was holding the rear hatch up while I did the swap. Of course, it would be easier if you had a helper, but I am proof that you can do it by your.

Everything works like new now.

While searching the web for some car parts, I saw a link to Amazon. I hadn't known that Amazon dealt with vehicle replacement parts.

The product is just what I needed - no surprise there. The exciting part is that now I have all five of my vehicles set up in Amazon's "parts Finder" and whenever I need a part, it is so easy to find.

A word of advice, it helps to have a second person to hold up the tailgate. I was alone and used a 2X4 to prop it open. But installation was easy and the lifts work great!

I gambled and only ordered one for my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, figuring I could remove both originals and test each to see which was failing and only replace that one. Well, with both removed, they both had more than enough pressure for me to figure out how to test them. If I had to do it again, I'd remove one, test the pressure on the door with only one, then reinstall the first, remove the second and test the one that was removed first. So I didn't think about that at the time & just decided to replace one at random. It did the trick, door works perfect. This replacement does appear to be a little longer than stock, which makes starting the second mounting bolt easy to cross-thread or not start at all. As other people have commented, you can work around this easily by simply having a second person to lift the door to full extension. Simply propping the door up with a ladder or board will not do. These fit perfectly and the easy install was done in minutes. Super strong lift. What a dream. Forgot how essential these can be, no more knockin my knogin!

Replaced both lift supports on my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am not mechanically inclined in the least, but I installed them myself in about 15 minutes with no special tools or assistance required. They work great.

I installed these struts on a 2000 JGC. The same strut works on both the left and right sides. You'll have to twist the cylinder to line up the bolts. Make it easier on yourself and have someone hold the liftgate up while you're replacing the struts.
