Imagine the Bible’s Sarah. She’s pretty important in the Holy scheme of things.

Imagine the Bible’s Hagar. She’s . . . well, who is Hagar?

Writer Kellam-Scott has provided readers with the gift of imagination and re-imagination. This brief work wonders about these two women. Wonders about their roles, their importance, their way of touching our faith today based on stories first told and retold thousands of year ago.

Let me tell you what I didn’t like. I wish Kellam-Scott had explained more. While I have educated guesses (since I’m a pastor that survived seminary) about her use of red tents and white tents for women during Biblical times, I wanted more details, more of a backstory. There are other examples, but when you read STRONGER THAN SIN… I suspect you’ll either agree or disagree with my desire for additional information.

And what I liked . . . Kellam-Scott grabs the reader’s hand and takes you into the world of two women. When she has Sarah become the one leading Isaac into the wilderness (rather than Abraham), the practical side of me said, “It didn’t happen that way!” But I delighted in re-imaging the story, and relishing the what-ifs. I delighted in Kellam-Scott’s expanding and ignoring and faithfully building on this essential tale of the Holy and human relationship. Even if you are unsettled by Kellam-Scott’s perspective, her words will invigorate your responses to Genesis’ truths.

Kellam-Scott’s STRONGER THAN SIN… may not be for everyone, but if you embrace the Bible for study, preaching, self-reflection and have an open mind and heart about stories and stories about stories . . . I highly recommend it.

A final comment: though I don’t personally know Kellam-Scott, we have read each other’s writings.
