Book Description

1968
"STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING HANDBOOK Edited by EDWIN H. GAYLORD, JR., Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Illinois and CHARLES N. GAYLORD, Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Virginia. A handy one-volume desk-top reference on structural engineering, this handbook provides engineers, architects, and other professionals involved in the design of structures with a wealth of useful engineering data. Written by 39 noted authorities, it gives you instant access to concise and accurate information on the planning, design, and construction of a large variety of engineered structures. Completely up-to-date and thoroughly user-oriented, it not only gives you vital data, but also shows you practical applications and offers many worked-out examples. Here's a sampling of material from some of the handbook's 26 major sections: DIGITAL COMPUTERS IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING examines programming and production phases of computer analyses, problem analysis, coding languages, flow-diagramming, direct methods, iterative methods, and program applications in structural engineering. FATIGUE AND BRITTLE FRACTURE covers fatigue of structural steels; fatigue resistance of beams and girders; reveted, bolted, and welded connections; and shows you how to design against fatigue and brittle fracture. THIN-SHELL CONCRETE STRUCTURES presents the behavior and mathematical analysis of thin shells by membrane theory, with bending theory corrections. It also shows applications to the analysis and design of domes, barrels, folded plates, hyperbolic paraboloids, and elliptical paraboloids, as well as discusses important construction details. PRESTRESSED CONCRETE outlines methods, materials, and prestressing systems, creep and shrinkage effects, analysis and design for flexure, cracking moment, ultimate moment, deflections, shear, bond, bearing, anchorage, and continuous beams. The handbook also covers soil mechanics and foundations, industrial buildings,.........." [from flaps]

5.0 out of 5 stars An Old Thick, Single-Volume Reference Book Packed with Information, March 27, 2009
This review is from: Structural Engineering Handbook, Edited By Edwin H. Gaylord, Jr. And Charles N. Gaylord, Copyright 1968 McGraw-Hill, Inc. (Hardcover)
This 1968 edition, though dated, allows for a relatively straightforward understanding of engineering concepts which nowadays are often hidden in computer programs for engineers.

Each chapter is written by a separate specialist. There is a wealth of data on such things as masonry construction, timber engineering, steel construction, soil mechanics, frame analysis, shell structures, long-span roofs, properties of steels, barrel vaults, bridge design, rigid joints, wind deflection of structures, design of towers, and much more.
