Schodek has written a book of value to amateurs or pros., January 21, 1999

This review is from: Structure in Sculpture (Hardcover)
Schodek is an excellent writer, teacher and researcher and his book gives a valuable set of warnings to readers about safety in construction of almost everything! His teaching prowess comes through in his well written and beautifully illustrated book and it made me want to go back to school even though 51 years have passed since my last college class. Of particular interest to me was Schodek's accurate coverage of the 1959 proof load test on the 99 1/2 foot tallest tower of the Simon Rodia Watts Towers in Los Angeles. He uses this test on what is now a National Historic Landmark, on pages 38 and 200 - 204 as an example of a good method to demonstrate the safety of a very large outdoor sculpture. Since I had personally designed and conducted that test as a volunteer forty years ago, I was pleased that the book was `right on' the truth on all the details. Structure in Sculpture is a great addition to my library and proved once more the importance of good books! .
