This reorganized and updated text examines the structure of stratification in the United States, focusing on the way one's class location influences his or her life opportunities. Beeghley uses three themes to illustrate social stratification: How power influences the distribution of resources in the United States, how social structure influences rates of events, and how social psychological factors influence how individuals act on, and react to, the situations in which they find themselves.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The Structure of Social Stratification in the United States examines the structure of stratification in the United States, focusing on the way one's class location influences his or her life opportunities. Beeghley takes a structural point of view that distinguishes between individual and structural-level explanations of stratification, and shows how three dimensions of stratification (class, gender, and race/ethnicity) are interconnected. The fourth edition includes important new data on the extent of wealth inequality in the U.S.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbiased prospective at its best..., July 29, 2004

This book fairly cut and dry, which is exactly what I like in sociology textbooks. Beeghley takes an unbiased view on social stratification and inequalities in contemporary society. He uses cross national and longitudinal data to effectively emphasize his points, which are valid and thought provoking. The book is well written and worth enough to keep on my bookshelf. Do you happen to be taking Beeghleys class? Do yourself the favor and buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, January 16, 2008
This review is from: Structure of Social Stratification in the United States, The (4th Edition) (Paperback)
I always ask my Professors if I can used a later edition textbook first before purchasing my textbooks, because it will save you a bundle of money. As an example: The 5th edition of Structure of Social Stratification has a used purchase price of 76.00, while the 4th edition of Structure of Social Stratification has a used purchase price of 0.41. Generally, if both editions are close together rarely is there much difference in the content of the books. ****The cardinal rule is to always ask your Professors first before purchasing an older edition of a textbook because it shows common sense and courtesy towards the Professor. This is a very interesting book to read and it explains the inequality of the classes in regards to advantages in the United States.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Great., November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Yeah, So I purchased this social stratification book for one of my sociology classes. I have to say its pretty great. It covers a lot of information that I was dumbfounded by... And I love the silly little examples it gives. All in all it I very well enjoy the book. Out of all the books I currently have for school I would have to say that this one is a keeper. It's great... Only thing I would complain about was the fact that it took a little while to get here... but that doesn't really affect my opinion on the knowledge it presents.
