Book Description

February 2003
Born in Paris and raised in Germany, Andreas Feininger (1906-1999) was the son of American artist and Bauhaus teacher Lyonel Feininger. By the 1920s, the younger Feininger had already established several stylistic traits in his photographic work, such as monumentalized subject matter and emphasis on texture and line. His nature photographs tend to reveal patterns in animal and plant forms as found in the backbones of a snake or veins in a leaf. After immigrating to America in 1939, Feininger completed almost 350 photographic essays for "Life" magazine between 1943 and 1962. In addition, he published numerous books on photographic theory and technique and his photographs were included in the Museum of Modern Art exhibition "The Family of Man." "Structures of Nature" presents a selection of Feininger's stunning nature photography. An essay by N. Elizabeth Schlatter considers his work in the context of German photography between the two world wars and in comparison with his American contemporaries. N. Elizabeth Schlatter is assistant director of the University of Richmond Museums.

STRUCTURES OF NATURE

In "Structures of Nature", the University of Richmond Museums has assembled a collection of Andreas Feininger's black-and-white photographic tributes to the beauty of patterns in the natural world. Though best known for his nostalgic slice-of-life snapshot of the crowds at Coney Island (1949), Andreas Feininger possessed a remarkable talent for capturing both the scientific and the artistic in something as minute as the veins of a single leaf to the regimented chaos of an untamed forest. In recognition of the equal strengths of both these aspects, his work has been shown in both the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Natural History.

Elizabeth Schlatter, Assistant Director and Curator of the Structures of Nature exhibit a the University of Richmond, initiated this project a year after Andreas Feininger's death in 1999. The collection is presented in three installments: Sea Creatures, Spirals & Symmetry; Micro & Macro; and Plants & Patterns. Her introductory essay on the life, background and influences on Andreas Feininger's nature studies concisely explores the photoartist's intended matrix of connections that exist amongst the eternal structures of both organism and ecology.
