More About the Author

Chic Dambach became chief of staff for Congressman John Garamendi (CA-10) in July 2011. He and the congressman have worked together on peacemaking projects in Africa and other initiatives for two decades. Chic had been President and CEO of the Alliance for Peacebuilding for 6 years. AfP is a network of conflict resolution experts and organizations devoted to help reduce the frequency and severity of violent conflicts. Previously, he was president of Operation Respect, a New York based organization created by Peter Yarrow to combat bullying, ridicule and violence in schools. He also served as president and CEO of the National Peace Corps Association from 1992 through 1998. Chic is a frequent speaker at conferences and on college campuses, and he has been a featured speaker at US Department of State sponsored National and Regional Town Meetings.

In 1999, Chic and Congressman Garamendi formed a team of returned Peace Corps Volunteers to work informally with the leaders of Eritrea and Ethiopia to help end their border war. The team was credited with "creating the momentum and the spirit which made this historic achievement (the peace treaty) possible." The team also worked with rebel leaders and the government of the Congo helping them form a coalition government and ending the large scale civil war.

Chic serves on the governing boards of the Alliance for Peacebuilding, the Institute for Economics and Peace and the CityLit Project. In addition, Chic was an official U.S. delegate to the United Nations World Food Conference in Rome in 2000. He was also a national champion kayak racer and served as an official in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.

He has written two books on effective nonprofit governance, and he wrote the foreword for the book Building Peace: Practical Reflections from the Field. His memoir, Exhaust the Limits: The Life and Times of a Global Peacebuilder, is published by Apprentice House of Loyola University Maryland. Best of all, he donated a kidney to his youngest son Kai.
