Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up A detailed history of the four wars that led to English supremacy in colonial North America. The book opens with an excellent discussion of how differences in ways of life between the Indians, the French, and the English led to inevitable conflict. One of the book's many strengths is the way in which Marrin explains how many of the practices of the time, especially those of the Indians, are now considered barbaric, but were largely accepted at that time. He then describes the major military actions of the wars. It is clear that he considers the Indians, with their losses of population and land, the real losers in the conflicts. Many titles minimize the roles Indians played in the conflicts, and Marrin fills in gaps left by their lack of coverage. Maps and reproductions are well chosen and add greatly to the text. The book is well written and well researched. Profiles provide insights into the personalities of the people involved. All of these strengths would make this a good book, but Marrin's unbiased historical analysis makes it an excellent one. He does not show prejudice against any group, and he puts the actions of various people in historical perspective. Readers will come away from this book knowing why people acted as they did, why these wars were important, and how their outcome influenced history. It is far better than Lawson's The Colonial Wars (Abelard-Schuman, 1972; o.p.). Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, Mo.
