From its founding in 1912, the African National Congress adopted the passive resistance advocated by Gandhi in its opposition to racial discrimination in South Africa; in 1960 Albert Luthuli, its president, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. South African journalist Holland describes the ANC mainly through the contributions of its principal leaders, two of whom, Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, were imprisoned for life in 1964. Only since then, writes Holland, has the ANC widely undertaken acts of violence and sabotage. Although the ANC has been accused of being Communist-dominated, in Holland's informative explanation it is shown to be a movement for black liberation whose Freedom Charter calls for a multiracial society. A detailed and readable history of the African National Congress. Holland's clear, journalistic style follows the ANC from its beginning days of peaceful agitation in 1912 through the first public demonstration in 1919 and the defiance during the 1950s to its status today. Special attention is given to the struggles of leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Anton Lembede, and Walter Sisulu. Comparisons of changes in the white government as well as the ANC highlight policy changes and the passage of repressive laws. Holland uses personal interviews as well as research in this book that concludes with the banning of the ANC and the results of that act. Eight pages of black-and-white photos enhance the text. --Mike Printz, Topeka West High School, KS
