5.0 out of 5 stars Strutting and smooching!!, August 15, 2001

This review is from: Strut (Audio CD)
Bought "blind" after a recommendation from a friend this album has been a real "find" and fulfils everything that Toney has set out to do in widening his appeal. There is some very strong material on this CD, and he has chosen his guests with care. He's also found some excellent musicians to realise his aims, with a special mention for Lewis Taylor who does the saxophone work on most of the tracks, and the excellent Craig T. Taylor who does guitar duties.Favourite non guest tracks are "Secret Agent" and "After Midnight" where Johnny Britt helps Toney with the programming. "Passion Dance " the track with Ronnie Laws is terrific, but for me the two standout tracks are the two guest vocal tracks. Evelyn King reminded me what an expressive voice she has on "Yearning for your love". My favourite is "If I didn't have your love" which features Jeremy Monroe. Throughout the album Kevin Toney stamps his own keyboard style on all the tracks. Material covers both struttin' and smooching! An excellent album, and a real "find".

This CD blew me away. I took a chance on an Amazon recommendation and it was a good one. This is a great CD. Lots of vesatility. He has several different styles. I never heard of Kevin Toney but now I'll be looking for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars "shades of funky-blues...inner-soul perception", July 18, 2001
This review is from: Strut (Audio CD)
Remember his debut album "Extra Sensual Perception" in 1999 on Shanachie...this has all the ear-marks of another hit...feel his heart is in the right place as inner-soul blends on every track...guest artists Ronnie Laws, Chieli Minucci, Jeremy Monroe and Evelyn "Champagne" King smooth the selections with an already funk overlay...stand outs ~ "KEEPING IT REAL", just stays with you, mind and soul..."AUNT MARY", sends you into another world reminiscent of the Gene Harris era hard-bop, blues and soul, only with a softer-edge...entire thirteen tracks will keep you movin' and groovin'...hats off to Toney and Shanachie believe they have another winner!

Total Time: 59:43 on 13 Tracks ~ Shanachie 5077 ~ (2001)

4.0 out of 5 stars The more you listen, the better it gets, March 3, 2002

This CD was recommended to me by Amazon.com. I took a chance and bought it, even though I'd never heard of Kevin Toney. On first listen, I thought it was lacking flow and that the two vocal tracks were out of place for this type of CD. However, now that I've listened to it several times, I quite enjoy the variety of the tracks and "Special Occasion" has to be my favorite.

I don't care for vocal tracks on jazz CDs, so with the exception of the two vocals on this CD, I would highly recommend it.

...I bought this based on the Amazon review. This is the first time I have taken the time to write a review. I can't stop playing "Special Occasion" followed by "Passion Dance" and "Strut". If you are looking to set the mood for a romantic evening this is the album to play...
