5.0 out of 5 stars Elvin Bishop-struttin' my stuff, February 9, 2004
By
This review is from: Struttin My Stuff (Audio CD)
I first heard a couple of cuts off of this CD when I was in Navy bootcamp in San Diego, CA I was just barely aware of Elvin at this time. I later saw him live at Orange County fair around 1980. His music reminds me of a nice country drive in an old pickup truck, with a fishin' pole and a six-pack in the cooler. I've always been a fan and will continue to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mickey Thomas before Starship, March 25, 2001

Before he took over as lead singer for Jefferson Starship, Mickey Thomas did the same for Elvin Bishop. "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" is a classic example of Mickey's incredible vocal ability. This recording brings back memories of the golden age of multi-track analog recording; 1974 to 1981.

I was 16 when I first heard this record. My friend taped me about 4 songs of his dad's original LP and we got in the car, he put it in. I was pretty much blown away. The Title song "Strutting My Stuff" Would have to be the album's best. Followed Closely by "I Love This Life I Lead". But Elvin Bishop seems more than just about funk music, he seems like the type of guy that would have burned out in the 70's if only anyone was paying attention. It is a shame this album didn't get enough attention because it is quite good. The most recognizable tune on the whole album is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Southern Rock, April 4, 2011

I wore out my vinyl album, which I bought in '75, then recently got the DVD. Either way, can't beat Elvin's first album as some of the best Southern rock you're gonna find - - "Fooled Around..." of course is the classic, but don't miss all the others.... there's not a 'reject' tune in the whole bunch!

Wore this 8-track out in junior high. Don't know if he was a church boy, but Elvin sounds like he learned to play at some smokin' hot white pentecostal church waaaay out in the woods, only with a black choir. Solid blues feel, but this is joyful stuff. Never fails to elevate my mood.

If you can't enjoy this album, you need a prescription for some "have fun" pills.

It is time to blackmail the official culture. Millions of girls must know that the thing Elvin Bishop sings are true. The whole point is: you can dance to it.
