5.0 out of 5 stars This earlier Sinch work is a departure for sure, but in an interesting way . . ., July 8, 2009

This review is from: Strychnine (Audio CD)
These guys do music like few others can. The previous albums I've owned by Sinch include their self-titled, and "Clearing the Channel", and both of those have been forceful and melodic journeys of intense sound. Their mastery of whatever genre you consider their music to be is almost indisputable, and I expected this album to be pretty much along similar lines. Just as "Channel" is more precise and nuanced than their self-titled album, I sort of expected "Strychnine" to be less polished and edgier.

In this I was correct, and thankfully so. This album starts with a guitar riff that could be mistaken for many other bands out there, and then the rhythm kicks in and the vocals start, and it becomes clear that this was a natural progression, or rather since this is an earlier work, a regression of their latest CDs. But then it got better, as the sound and the feeling seemed to become even bolder than before.

With more pronounced yet esoteric vocals, and good, at times very heavy, though also occasionally disengaging guitar and drum work, the tracks on this album can mostly stand up individually. Some of the tracks didn't quite earn their keep the first few times through, but I've grown to appreciate them all on their own merits. If you like Sinch, this is a must-have. Both the progression of their music and the interesting alternative form this album takes make this disc a good buy.
