U2 "Achtung Baby" 20th Anniversary

Biography

U2 formed in 1978 after Larry Mullen pinned a 'musicians wanted' ad to the notice board at Dublin's Temple Mount School. Adam Clayton had discovered rock'n'roll as a thirteen year old, buying his first acoustic guitar and then talking his parents into buying him a bass guitar. 'It just sounded good to me. Deep and fat and satisfying.'

From the beginning, U2 were marked out by their passion. "A band… Read more in Amazon's U2 Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid U2 single, February 25, 2001

Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of: This is the same version off the album All That You Can't Leave Behind. Nothing has changed.

Big Girls Are Best: Sounds like an outtake from U2's Pop album. And since this song is produced and mixed by Howie B, that's the very reason why it sounds like it belongs on Pop! It's very Beatles-esque, with vocal harmonies and a classic Beatles "yeah yeah-yeah yeah". Take this song for what it is - a very harmless, fun, pop-rock song with a 60's groove to it.

Beautiful Day (Quincey & Sonance Remix): I'm not too big on "filler remixes" - you know the kind. One beat over and over a lyric. Boring! Wait a second though! This is not that type of remix! It might sound like it for the first 10 seconds, but the rest of it is much more interesting. More sonic layers find their way into the song, including a very soothing Bono vocal, and some futuristic synths and a very crisp sounding guitar. Finally after 2 and a half minutes, the chorus of Beautiful Day cuts in, and fades into the lyrics of Beautiful Day with a dance beat overlayed in the background. The chorus for the rest of the remix is very fresh sounding, with Edge's guitar echoing in and out. Very beautiful! No, this isn't a butchered attempt at a remix - this is truly a new innovative way of representing Beautiful Day. It's still such a happy and inspirational song.

If you like the song Beautiful Day, if you're a fan of U2's album All That You Can't Leave Behind, or if you're a fan of U2's album Pop - I recommend this single!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Moments, March 6, 2001

The second song on this single CD collection is a non-album track titled Big Girls Are Best, a song which evolves from an elastic blend of funk and techno reminescent of the German industrial days played on with their 1991 Grammy Award winning Achtung Baby! The funky basslines smoothly mixed with aggressive and melodic guitar riffs create a texture full with ambient techno, and tribal vibes fusing compelling house rhythms. The song carries a sultry beat that dares the listener not to get up and dance. And get up and dance is what you'll do, with the agrressiveness of powerful rock sounds. The third track on this mini-CD is a techno remix of the grammy Award winning Beautiful Day. The remixing, technically rearranged by DJ's Quincy and Sonance, create the flavor which POP failed to do. It is a sonic masterpiece fusing house rhyhms and techno sounds layered with futuristic dancescapes that plays with the gloss neon moods of a trip-hop lounge. The patterns, incorporating elements of tribal, techno, electro, ambient, dub and house blend with a beautiful array of haunting and soulful rhythms. And the original melodies are not lost. This mix edges on Darwinism. Of Music. And. It's Beautiful. The songs on U2's newest CD, ATYCLB, paint a portrait with mini-video stories, stories most definitely not for boys. There are reflections of human nature in the sadness of loss stolen from suicide as Bono, the band's singer, somehow creates a positive manner in his passion of the passing of a close friend. It is the second chapter in the explorations of human consciousness and drama. Stuck in A Moment You Can't Get out Of, a song that, lyrically, like a jester hides pain for a moment of playing the fool: "I was unconscious, half asleep..." Yet through it all the singer gives us hope as he points out: "It's just a moment, This time Will Pass." Musically the song is full of passion, blessed with hidden anger capturing feelings both sorrowful and hopeful. The sounds are beautifully arranged, layered in a style where every note is perfectly heard. And felt. The band is back to writing music. The singer is back to writing compelling lyrics. Indeed, U2 is the loudest Folk Rock band in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Collectors of U2 B-Sides, February 27, 2001

The average fan might not be interested in a CD like this, but die-hard U2 fans will love it. I have listened to the track "Big Girls Are Best" over and over. Musically it is solid - just as well produced as anything that made it onto "All That You Can't Leave Behind." The lyrics are quite humorous - Bono is at his tongue-in-cheek best. The remix of "Beautiful Day" is worth having as well.

If "All That You Can't Leave Behind" left you hungry for more new U2, this will help satisfy the craving.
